I've been contemplating the usage of the both apps and here is my personal review for use of both apps on a Windows based system

PDA.net
Pros:
  • Does not require any additional setup like proxifier on PC
  • Has a DHCP Server which is very helpful

Cons:
  • Connection is not so stable.
  • Iphone looses battery power very fast even when plugged in
  • VPN Connection not possible,

OpenSSH with iPhone Tunnel Suite 2.7

Pros:
  • Can Tether using USB
  • Battery stays charged when connected using USB
  • Stable Connection and can be used for long periods
  • Connection stays on while talking on the phone
  • No IP Address/change issues as it uses tunneling to 127.0.0.1

Cons:
  • Requires additional Socks proxy software.
  • VPN does not work

Net Net give or take, I'd say PDA.net has potential and is almost there if it can work out the following: In the order of my preference

1. Battery drainage should stop when plugged in. If Openssh and socks can achieve this when why can PDA.net not.
2. VPN connectivity.
3. Stable ongoing connection

have you try pdanet update yesterday? they fixed some bugs there, tried it out last night it works perfectly.

yes I did. At least in my case the battery drainage still exists even when plugged in.

There has been an update yesterday.
Can anyone test out if the battery drains when connected?

Tethering will almost always drain the battery, regardless of whether or not it is plugged in. The only thing the devs can do is minimize CPU usage as much as possible which would of course use less battery power. Tethering utilizes the CPU, the Wi-Fi and cellular radio (either 3G or E, 3G will drain the battery faster) while acting as an access point/DHCP server for your computer...hence the massive battery drain. From my tests though, you can probably tether for a good 4+ hours while plugged in before the phone completely dies...intermittent tethering of 25-40 minutes shouldnt drain anymore than 20%, 25% at the most of the battery. YMMV though.

This weekend I was tethered with PdaNet for 12-16 hours at a stretch. With the phone plugged in to the outlet (not to the computer) it may not have been charging the battery, but it certainly wasn't draining it either. The phone was at nearly full charge at the end of the day.

I tried it yesterday and did notice that the battery dropped when connected. I'm using the digital battery with bossprefs. It may also be because I was talking on the phone too with the screen on and adding contacts.

High Expectations but tethering does not drain if used through OpenSSH with iphonetunnel but then again that does not have, DHCP, Wifi etc.
