I was looking for a PDF document which I received by email and couldn't find it anywhere. So I used Spotlight, which displayed it in the drop down list, showing it as being in PDF Documents.

However when I go to All My Files in Finder, my document is not listed under PDF Documents.

How comes Spotlight shows it's location as PDF Docs, but it is not actually there. Where else could it be located.

All My Files just groups files for an easy to read display. That PDF file could be located anywhere. It is not really located in a folder called PDF Docs.
To find it make sure Show Status bar is enabled from the view menu in Finder. Click the File in PDF Docs and it's path will be displayed in the status bar.

Thanks for your response mrapplegate, I presume you mean enable "show path bar" . However this is no use, since, as I said, my PDF Doc is not listed in "All My Files".......PDF Docs.

My search for the elusive location continues !!

Oh I'm sorry I completely misread that.

If you see it in spotlight, hover your mouse over the item, it will show a preview.
Mouse over the preview and hold down the option and command keys and wait a couple of seconds. The path will appear at the bottom.

Nice tip! I'd never seen that one before.

Thanks mrapplegate, that worked fine for a copy of the pdf that I put on the desktop, so I wouldn't have to keep using spotlight to find it.

However for the original pdf highlighted by spotlight it doesn't work.

It's not causing me a problem, just irritates me that I don't know where it is filed.:)

Hmm, interesting. When you use that tip I mentioned what path shows up? Or none shows up?

When I use your tip on the copy I put on the desktop, it just tells me it is located on the desktop......no path.

Nothing shows up when I use your tip on the original PDF shown in Spotlight, which I was trying to locate.

I give up, sorry I could not help. I don't know why it did not have a file path.
