Pegasus2 R4 or 1TB PCIe?

Im tied in choosing between these two. My main purpose is to stream 500GB of samples for my project and sometimes editing 10 minutes of 1080p video clips. One thing I mind is the Pegasus's noise fan level. I've read that it's quite noisy compared to the nMP. Then the 1TB PCIe, i've been searching in eBay for 2 weeks now. I've seen quite reasonably priced Samsung 1TBs however, with the import charges included (extra $100) it made them no longer reasonable as I have to take into account $50 for shipping (Total: PCIe+$150). I'm leaning more towards the PCIe but the import charges is a huge huge huge drawback.

I wouldn't look to a PCIe drive for working with video, only as a scratch disk, That 1Tb will fill up quickly.

Thunderbolt raid storage only, really. Who cares about noise, get a longer cable and stick it under a table across the room if you're bothered

Why not buy the 1TB drive option for your nMP in the first place?

I suppose the next best option is external SSDs now. What PCIe solution are you considering? An alternative would be a single 1TB SSD in an external TB or USB3 enclosure.

I've got the R4 Diskless with 4x WD RE4 2TB drives. They are not loud at all and I'm quite happy with it. So that's one thing you can consider- getting a R4 diskless and DIY.

I have the Peagaus 2 R4 with the included disks. My unite shipped with Toshiba drives. The thing is noise as hell. If I wasn't too busy with work I would deal with Pegasus support and see if this is normal or not.

I use it has a scratch drive for FCPX and it does the trick.

Super silent solution is the Sonnet Echo Express III-D box, with Accelsior cards, or Sonnet Tempo Pro cards installed. Thunderbolt 2 interface, silent, and lots of blasting fast storage.

I have both a 1TB Acelsior card and a Sonnect Tempo Pro (w. 2x512GB Samsung Pro 840s), and that is fast storage.

You could have 6TB inside that box; 3xSonnet Tempo Pro cards, each with 2x1TB SSD in Raid0.

Why not buy a 4-bay TB2 enclosure (OWC Thunderbay 4 or something from the Pegasus-line) and fill it with 1TB 2.5" SSDs? Both crucial and samsung have models with that capacity.

That should be relatively "cheap" and with good performance. Raid0 with a good backup (or raid0 of three disks and a 3TB mechanical drive as the fourth, used as a backup, cloned with superduper! or something).

I think i'll get a 1TB PCIe first then a pegasus. 1TB should be sufficient for now since my job is only to edit not more than 10 minutes of FHD clips. A pegasus would cost a lot more and i'm really sceptical about the noise it makes. I'm just so used to the quietness of the nMP. Also, if my work does pile up then it's imminent for a pegasus. And for those who were pondering why I didn't get the 1TB instead of 256GB is because:
1) I'm still a university student ($800 is a lot to consider). That was all I could afford that time.
2) I've been doing fine with 256GB both on my rMBP and nMP as I have external storage to store files until i've been asked to work on videos and photos now. Before this was only music production and web development.

I have another question, if I were to install the 1TB PCIe into my nMP, would that void the warranty?? because I plan to sell off my 256GB. thanks and I appreciate all the replies!

Yes that would void warranty, unless you had Apple perform the upgrade, and they do not sell that yet...

And, where do you intend to but the 1TB PCIe SSD?

Finally, to start off, before you buy a Pegasus, Echo box, or something bigger, take a look at LaCie. They have the new TB2 box as well as the rugged external 500GB SSD TB...

Apple does sell though. But it's just impossible to buy from them. It costs $2700 and that excludes service charge which they will not sell unless you have them change for you. Ebay is a good place to buy. They're selling $800 or more which I think is reasonable but because of import charges it's a nono for me. The only option for me now is to wait for a 3rd party or find one in eBay that is cheaper

The speed on the Accelsior card, or the Sonnet Tempo Pro (Raid0 SSDs), is comparable to that of the internal PCIe SSD, if going through a TB2 box like the Echo Express. And these you can expand on...

I don't have a Pegasus2 R4 but I have a similar unit, an Areca ARC-5026. I have it on my desk, in my bedroom, and it's not excessively noisy at all. Louder than an nMP? Yes. Annoyingly loud like a jet plane? No. Excellent performance, too.
