I just updated from iOS 9.3.4 to iOS 10 Dev Beta 5. Everything looks good so far, except the "People" photo album: it is currently in the status "10779 of 11005 items processed".

I can look at the photos alright, but even after leaving it overnight, it won't finish processing. I use iCloud Photo Library.

Anyone else having the issue? Any workarounds?

I had this issue. I fixed it (I think) eventually but I ended up having to restore my photo library from a Time Machine backup. It involved turning off iCloud photo library, removing the photos manually from the phone, as it didn't delete them automatically as it should. I then noticed it had removed the Albums (not the photos themselves) from the main library on my iMac. I restored that library, waited for it to finish repairing after opening it again, then re-enabled iCloud photo library on my phone. The people library has now finished populating but I'm still not sure it will work if I add another photo to be indexed.

You could try simply turning iCloud photo library off then on again. But, in short, be very careful my fix and I'm still not sure it is fully fixed nearly resulted in permanent data loss. Ensure you have local backups (not just cloud ones) before you mess with it.

Sorry can't be more help than that.

I had the same issue and reported it to Apple. I'm not going to extremes to "fix" Apple's but on a beta build - it's Apple's job to fix the bug - plus - we'll have another beta soon - I also have a number of incidences where i have to press "show all" to see the pictures - the summary view is blank. How do you feel the facial recognition is? I see many instances of separate files created for the same face. I don't think they're doing that great a job with it.

Yeah, I should report it myself as well. Weirdly it worked fine on my iPad, so don't know if it's just a random upgrade issue.

As far as I've tried it, the facial recognition seems to be quite good. It's mostly got all of them right, it's struggled differentiating a few but they've been very close relatives and look quite similar. There are a number of instances of separate files for the same face but most of them are due to either weird angles, difficult lighting, other objects obscuring the face or other issues with the photo itself. It's definitely a lot better than it was in El Cap, whether it's better than Googles AI I'm not sure. I tried Googles photos service for a bit but I didn't give it a very large set to work on, it still made mistakes even so. Although that was with the object recognition as Face recog on Google photos isn't enabled in the EU at the moment.

The more we train it, the better it should become. The only downside for me at the moment is that the data isn't shared over iCloud, so each device has to be taught on its own. At least for now.

Edit: After I give the separate file the same name as an existing face it offers to merge them. Then detects other faces that are the same, it got all of those right.

I must say, it's way better than El Capitan face recognition.

Also, after randomly adding and deleting a few photos today, at some point it magically completed indexing. Something got stuck but I still don't know what - all is good now.

I hope they will provide a more reliable way of "un-sticking" it in the GM.

I really enjoy the feature that stitches together photos in short movies. Somehow it gets it "just right". Love it!

The more I'm using it, the more I like it. I'm merging unidentified faces, with identified ones now and it's started picking out matches that I'd struggle to get right especially across a room. Huge improvement. What I'd really like now is something in the UI, to indicate that there are new faces it would like me to confirm.

The object recognition seems pretty good too. Plus one to the Memories feature also, it's lovely.

Frankly, I wouldn't spend any time on this feature, except to fulfill your duties as a beta tester. They have reset it with the release of each new beta, so it seems to be a source for a lot of frustration if you get it the way you like it only to have Apple reset it again. But, I wasn't kidding about the beta tester role, so reporting it is a good idea.

My libraries not that large and the only way to test it is to use it. I'll be submitting bug reports though definitely.

Yeah, but some people are trying to use it as if it is a final product. They then post how annoyed they are that it keeps undoing their work.

wont even scan or run here. tells me to plug in an lock. I did, nothing. Then I took a selfie and it added it. But cant even remove it. I can delete the picture in camera roll but it leaves a blank placeholder in the album. Never scanned for anything else. Not quite ready for prime time for sure.

Right, and it's gotten better over each beta for me too. Less dupes to merge to start out after each beta upgrade and reset and better object recognition. I do hope they continue to improve this feature after the beta cycle (hopefully without resetting the database)
