People buying "lesser" Apple products

I noticed after the Ipad mini many people buying lesser products like a mini over a full size one and seems the 5C will see people avoid the 5S.

Yes the colours look interesting but inside it's it will offer less than a 5C. Probably no NFC, Fingerprint sensor or duel LED flash.

Ipad Mini and 5C will therefore be middle market fashion products and the 5S and full size Ipad will be flagship.

This is called cannibalization. However it may seem, they are still iOS devices. Some may buy higher end while some may not. Either way, more devices mean more money for Apple through their App and Music stores.

Yup, Apple nailed it perfectly (in size, weight, form factor) with the Mini.

Yup, Apple nailed it perfectly (in size, weight, form factor) with the Mini.

This is why I bought a Mini. I took months to try and decide between an iPad 4 and the Mini. In the end, the Mini on AT&T won. I have not regretted that decision once.

The person who wrote the original post is correct - for some* people its a fashion statement while for folks like myself it is not.

I have a regular iPad and looking back, I wish I had bought the mini due to its size. As for the iPhone models, the 5c seems very much like a 5 in a new wrapper. I have the 4s and will keep it a bit longer then decide whether to get the 5c or 5s or look elsewhere. I admit one of my gripes is that for those of us with not the greatest vision, it is annoying that Apple continues to insist on super small fonts being the only choice native and areas where you can enlarge fonts does nothing for menus etc. The latter being the reason I may look elsewhere. If I had my way, instead of 4x4 home screen I might prefer 3x3 and larger fonts under the icons, as well as some menu options at the bottom showing less options and "more" turned into a triangle pointed to the right meaning "more options" thus leaving room for larger text/fonts.

Well enough with the gripe and yes for some these items are fashion statements and for others, its about function first over form.

Presumably their market research has suggested that the profit gains from new customers entering the ecosystem outweights the profit losses due to cannibalization.

I'm not sure if you mean 'looks' here literally, but to me the 5s *looks* more like the 5, while the 5c *is* more like the 5.

To be honest I kind of loved the look and feel of the 5c. I really like how it feels lighter, the colors, and the curviness that's a bit more like the 3 and 3gs. If it were looks alone, I'd absolutely pick the 5c over the 5s.

That said, my 5 is holding up just fine so I think I'll wait for now.

Point well taken - 5c for internals resembles the 5 and 5s is further along with the technology. Btw, (not kidding here) I started having issues with the usb/power cable being able to plug into the phone (4s)...so ended up getting the 5s. I originally was going for the 5c but they were out and I admit I can't be without a phone as this is my only phone line. So far, I think the 5c would have been a fine choice and the 5s simply has things on it that really don't make much difference to me so they accepted my phone on trade in and I did tell the guy (I am a bit honest to a fault) that it seemed problematic with the plug part of the phone but he said that was okay so here I am today, with a new phone... and it was my 2nd choice to the 5c.

We live in strange times.
