Actually, Apple often does the upgrades silently, esp. for stock model orders, which people can and undoubtedly will return unopened.
I'm wondering what will happen to my sisters order she had a 20" CTO that she ordered on the 23rd and that arrived at the end of last month. I finally got around to setting it up for her monday and there were a number of issues so I called apple for her and they are taking her old one back and sending her a new one out. The online order thing still says the old model but its a CTO so I can't imagine they will have any more non refurbished(Apple phone rep said new unit non refurb guaranteed) CTO models sitting around.
It says attention required and then says that the product won't ship out until apple recieves your return. So I'm thinking when the order gets pushed after her imac gets back to them that it will update but I'm not sure. Anyone ever have this issue before.

well, i ordered the "old 17 in imac" for 1,200 yesterday. looks like my order got bumped to the new 20 inch
Oh and I forgot to ask how did you get a custom configured 20" if you originally ordered a 17"? Did they just pick a config for you? What is different about your config than a standard 20"? If you don't mind answering that is.
well at the time, the only configuration on my 17 was a wireless mouse and keyboard. so that must be the custom configuration.
after i saw the new bluetooth keyboard i changed to wired because i need a numberpad. i dont know why the custom configure never went away, but mine is no different than the base imac.

Depends a lot on what your doing with it...
I personally will enjoy the 20" iMac + 20" widescreen dell monitor because I do some web work
I got my 20" 2.4 Core 2 Duo on Tuesday. There was only one store in Atlanta that would sell it to me. The other two stores had them in stock, but had not put them out, so they refused to sell them. The Perimeter Mall store did not have them on display, but they could sell them. I added 1Gb more of apple RAM, and I am very satisfied with my first Apple computer. NO BUGS!
well in my sisters case she payed the money for the upgraded vram in the old model and it doesn't look like they are crediting her the difference. So the difference is only around 200 bucks. I think its worth it especially for her. She keeps her computers for ever. I built her last one 7 or so years ago.
I would say,"Definitely". Sometimes I want to use programs that do translations and word studies, but on the current screen I've got it is impossible to have two windows open simultaneously. I love that Apple only has the option with desktops to "Go big, or go bigger". Before I was computer literate I stuck myself with a crippled dell, and now I see Apple as the only way to go.
I think a general rule is if you think you'll need it, be on the safe side and get it. It's easier to upgrade RAM and HDD than it is to upgrade screen size...
