percentage of yellow tinged 27" imacs

im really miffed at this yellow tinge business.

i'd love a new imac, but if in all probability if i have a yellow tinged screen i'm hesitant.
i want my imac to be perfect, afterall we're paying top dollar for these.

my question is what is the percentage of new machines purchased that have this problem?
 
I doubt a certain percentage is known because Apple hasn't released any statistics about this matter. Don't worry about it, you can return it if it has it. Besides, in forums like this it's normal that people come in and tell about their issues.
 
I'm debating over the same thing, ordering the imac. My "heart" says yes, but my mind says no.
I could get a better spec Pc and a nice 27" monitor(not the same resolution but np) for way less money. Upgradable and easier to fix.

On the other hand, OSX seems pretty easy to use, the imac looks awesome, would free my desk of a lot of cables and the tower and the i7 is more than enough for my home recording studio. And of course i'm really looking forward to get logic pro.

It's just that i have to order it online, and if it comes with problems it's a lot of trouble, so i'm a bit reluctant.

Should i get applecare? Will it make a difference in the case of a return/refund? It's basically the same in the 1st year. right?

Sorry for taking over the thread, but yeh, i would like to know a percentage.
This situation reminds me of Dirty Harry lol.

I would guess you are way off target with that number you plucked out of the sky. :) What I would say is less than 2% of iMac users can spot the yellow tinted display. You really have to set up intricate tests and look very carefully to notice it. So Apple would probably say it is less than 1%, if they did release numbers, basing it on AppleCare support calls and store returns from the tiny minority of people who know there is a problem.

If I wanted a perfect display, I would not have bought an iMac.

i based my guess (thats all it is) on the fact that apple AND most users don't give a rats about it. i myself personally an extremely OCD about EVERYTHING related to my computer - performance, colours, latency, you name it. given that, my ~December 2009 model does have any colour deficiencies from what i can see, ive done a number of "tests" to see if there is bleeding, discolouration etc and it seems fine.

not to mention that the "firmware update" from early 2010 fixed a large marjotiy of users problems.

I agree. That's the most important statistic: almost all customers they sell to don't know, can't see it, or don't care. And this may may have helped Apple make certain decisions that could have been taken when moving into mass production. :)

But I am very confident way more than 2% have this problem. It is 100% in the 8 machines we have at work, and the ones (2) I have at home. On some units you really do have to look very hard sitting in the perfect position to see it. It doesn't bother me in the slightest, or anyone else at work.

oh most certainly! i wouldnt cry if i had it - but i would be annoyed, im sure the majority of other users would be too!

are they all similar production weeks? what weeks are they? but you are right, its probably likely that more then 10% have the problem - i should have said "only 2% care about this problem" ;)

We don't know those numbers for the refreshed iMacs yet, but previously reported multiple cases of 3 - 4 - 5 - and more replacements suggest much higher past rates of noticeable yellow tint (or extreme lack of luck, or pickiness of the multiple reporting individuals).

It starts to look like not much was done on the iMac displays this time, so we may expect similar rates of the yellow tint cases for the refreshed models which is sad, really.

I never thought it was likely Apple would do much about this problem unfortunately. Apple is not going to make drastic changes to production to satisfy the demands of a tiny minority of its customer base. Especially if those changes reduce profit margins on the product. For those who can't use these machines, you'll probably have to wait for Apple to adopt newer display technology before this problem goes away.

some people can never be pleased, eh? ;) but then again - if you pay for a premium product you would expect premium results! too bad apple isnt "that company" anymore :(
 
I'll probably order it anyway, i don't do professional photos or anything, mainly music, unless it's really bad, it won't affect me much.

Out of curiosity, ran the grey bar test on my current screen, a Samsung 22", absolutely perfect, no dead pixels, yellow tinge, anything.
Have a flawless full hdtv Samsung, can't say the same thing about my LG hdtv tho. Coicidence?

Oh, c'mon, Please, please, pleeeease...
If it is as good as you say I may even frame it and keep it on my wall (with the Apple logo in yellow, of course)

I have to admit I was more of an optimist and some people said in the past that, eventually, Apple always does it right. But it was in those times before it become, in effect, a telephone manufacturer, I guess...

Well, to be fair, they still allow to replace iMacs on the yellow screen issue, which can't be profitable (or can it?).
But the hassle with carrying the computer back and forth must cut into the customer patience for sure.

So here comes my idea (Apple, are you listening?).

What if we could order as a, say, $100 option, a pre-screened iMac, with a guaranteed, tinge free panel?

I (being in minority of "extremely" demanding users) would surely go for it.

What do you think?

I can see it now: a BTO option saying "display functions as advertised - $100" :p

I still think the yellow tinge problem on 27" iMacs isn't nearly as bad as it was early this year and last year. I've yet to see a recent iMac half as bad as my jaundiced Week 45 i5.

good point - thats the initial "investment" too - you expect that kind of service for paying a premium. its a good feature of apple.

im not sure how well it would get on. if apple were to provide a "tinge free matte" option - boy...... that would sell like wildfire!
 
even if 20% where jaundiced - that means 80% aren't...
those are pretty decent odds
i'm just trying to get an idea of what my chances are of getting a yellow one

it's probably not even that noticeable when working on stuff
but hey, it should be perfect
