Canada eh?
Well I'm officially a 'I'm not waiting for leopard or SR' new mac user. After much consideration I decided the current 17" MBP was perfect for what I need/want.

This is my first Mac, I own a managed IT services company and support PC's using Linux/Windows and will continue to do so...the mac feels a lot like a Linux computer that was tweaked for an unreasonably long period of time...but this has everything working out of the box.

I have no screen issues, lighting looks good and there are no dead pixels...it's a matte finish for anyone interested.

I've just started installing a few things, aMSN (I really like iChat but I only have a couple people on my AIM list from many years ago), Opera, Jam packs for garage band, paralells so I can do my accounting in Windows...I was also going to keep using outlook 2007 but after I synced my Nokia E61 via bluetooth for the first time I've decided to try iMail / iCal combo out...so far I'm quite happy with it.

We're on our 3rd day together so I realize my experience with it isn't very comprehensive but 99% of the time it's been my experience that bad hardware (aka lemons) are bad out of the box...if I haven't had any strange problems yet I should be decent...heres hoping anyway.

If anyone has any recommendations for must have apps that a first time mac user should have (I'm not talking big stuff, I'm talking the little obscure utilities that just make life better than it already is) let me know, I did some searches but they were all really old lists from 2005 'top 10 utilities every mac user must get').

Anyway, I thought to spare everyone another 'omg i got a new mac thread' but since I often read people saying that only people who are complaining about problems post...I thought I'd change that and post that I have a perfectly working system (albeit I can understand the heat issues people were talking about...to say it runs warm would be quite modest...but this is how it was designed so I figure I'll be ok, my desk is a hard plastic and gives enough room for it to breath).

Thanks,
Chad

grats on your first Mac!

I just bought mine a few weeks ago and it is awesome!

Be sure to get Adium, which is a all in one chat program for aim, msn, yim ,etc. Get quicksilver too, it'll make your experience much better. It certainly makes the finder obsolete for me.

I'm glad your enjoying your new Mac. I like seeing threads like this. It seems sometimes when people only write abouts issue they have, that some people get turned away.

Good deal! What are your thoughts on the portability of the 17 inch...have you felt the size is okay for you on the go?

I like having text wrangler handy, for the times when I want to bang out some quick code (whatever it may be). It's a handy little editor (free)...

Portability is fine, I ordered a mac case leather edition (thanks to whoever posted the link to that in the best mac carrying case thread) along with the sleeve and what not (never had a sleeve for a pc before...but we'll see how that goes) and I have a 17" targus backpack I've used for my PC laptops.

I always had 15.4" screens and this feels about the same, I know some people are into ultra portable 12-13" units but I just don't like working with that much screen real estate...I am looking forward to getting rid of my 22" screen on my desk and getting a 30"...or 42" if they end up coming out in the next year or so at a high enough res.

As for the comments, I haven't tried Adium, I put aMSN on but it's rather annoying...I just wanted webcam functionality for MSN but it doesn't seem to work very reliability with regards to that, sometimes I can get the others and they cant see me or vice versa or not at all...I'm going on a mission to convert the world to skype as we speak :)

Quicksilver looks good but I am hardly efficient yet...I've tried to leave things at the default settings with regards to the dock and what not so I can see how it works and then make adjustments to suit me as I go...

I'll throw my setup in the post your setup thread as soon as I clean my desk...I've been doing paper work this week so all my stuff is covered with papers...I have a pretty sweet setup though so I'm sure it will impress :)

I've been trolling this forum for a fairly long while now and it seems like a great community, expect to see more of me around now that I actually have a mac :D

Thanks,
Chad
