Perfect size for contacts photos

Hi guys, I have a very quick question: What's the ideal size/resolution for a contact picture without using a lot of space? I used to add an image from a photo but they are really big, then I read somewhere that 500 x 500 should do and now I read that 1200 x 600 is the sweet spot.

Any help would be deeply appreciated.

Well, size wise, smaller is better if you worry about space. And based on that super small circle, I guess even 300*300 is enough.
