I have an iPhone 6 for daily use and some older iPhones like 5s and 5.

How is performance of iOS 9 on the older iPhone or iPads?
Is it slow?
I read one person report that it sucks on the 4S.

Its slower in almost all respects on the iPad 2 - i'm posting a review with testing later on.

I dont ****ing get it; why this is such a hard concept. Just like Windows on a PC; sure it runs on older hardware but slower and likely missing a few features. Idk WTF you expected using 2-3-4 year old hardware frankly.

It's IMPOSSIBLE to support old hardware at some point when it gets too old. If you're too cheap to upgrade your hardware then you have to simply deal with a little lag.

I swear I've seen so many iOS9 sucks on my 3-4 year old hardware that is just flat out braindead posting now (not to OP but other morons who really believe it).

The iPhone 6 came out a year ago. They showed all the iOS 9 demos at WWDC...using an iPhone 6.

The iPhone 6 is still being sold.

How the **** is the iPhone 6 old?

I am not complaining; this thread is for figuring out whether it makes sense to UPGRADE.

iOS 9 brings literally no new features on older devices, so why should it be slower, especially since Apple highlighted performance gains in iOS 9?

My 2008 Macbook runs Windows 10 better than it ran Windows 7.

On 6 Plus and it's slower then 8.4 . So was Apple blowing smoke about the whole apps using metal... The 6 plus is barley a year old and it's already slow. I'm not sure how the regular 6 is.

What the hell did Apple spend the last year doing??

Its not like iOS 9 is a particularly feature rich release. That being said things would still be indexing I guesss

6 is fine, no difference from 8.4.1 but then again i usually never have problems, surely someone out there is screaming at their 6 right now

its not indexing, this indexing thing is blown out of the water its all everyone says now, indexing left & right & how its takes hours even days..more like seconds or a few minutes..

6+ struggles cause of its resolution, it has the same gpu power as the 6, with much higher resolution. not exactly the smartest call on apple's end to make it with such a high res & no extra gpu power..

iOS 9.1 on my iPad 4. I think it runs better than iOS 8. I used the public betas, and I had almost given up hope and was going to get a new iPad this year, but 9.1 has given it new life. (I skipped 9.0 and went right to 9.1, so I can't comment on the 9.0 public release).

Well the thing is they made a big deal about it at the iOS Keynote. I believe it was called Foundation. iOS 9 is supposed to run well on older hardware because they take out the features that can only run by design on newer models. So since the features are absent the OS as a whole is meant to run smoother. I'd be upset too if I were people updating to iOS 9 and being told things would be different now.

I'm the guy screaming at my iPhone 6.

Huge difference for me on my iPhone 6. Fresh installs on all versions released recently: 9.0GM / 9.1 beta / 9.0 Public Release....all slower than 8.4.1 w/ fresh install (currently installed).

There is lag when pulling up control center, going into apps, pulling down search, "sometimes" going into Proactive, slight stutters within Settings app, stuttering in Apple Music, slight pauses when going into a Message contact.

The only thing I found to be on par with 8.4.1 is Safari, which is a shame, because I use Safari more than any other application on my phone. Content blocking is heaven sent. My favorite feature released since iOS 7.

I agree that indexing is bull. A fresh install usually takes 10 - 20 minutes before it starts performing normally. Anything longer than that isn't going to "settle down" in a few days. More like, you're used to it after a few days ;).

May I offer you a shot of tequila, perhaps a Xanax?

People keep older devises for a variety of reasons. Luck for me a buddy had his older iPhone 5 to loan me when my phone was stolen. I'm getting a 6s+ on launch day but I have a 4s, wouldn't want to use it for a primary but it's great for taking to the gym. I even have an iPhone1 docked in my mustang that I hardly ever drive. It will finally be retired when I get the new one. :)

It's pretty lame, to put it mildly, when an iPhone 5 and 5S handle iOS9 better than the 6+ does. If Apple had any morals then they would offer a very healthy trade in for 6+ owners against a 6S+ because this first phablet has been gimped from the start. It hasn't even performed well on iOS8, the o/s it came with. Scandalous.

iPhone 5 feels slightly more sluggish under 9.0 than 8.4.3 or whatever the final 8 release was (I can't remember).

Specifically, animation transitions aren't as smooth in multitasking, control center, and spotlight search. The stutter can be pretty bad.

Overall though, 9.0 is useable. It's just not as pleasant as it should be. I'm thankful though that the keyboard shift at least changes the key capitalization of the keys now.
