My office recently was broke into, so in the aftermath, I'm thinking of how to better secure computers. (The thieves literally hacked open doors.)

I think the older Mac Pros with its large enclosure handles could be easily secured with a thicker cable or even chain looping through it, as opposed to depending on those little keyed cable lock slots - which strike me as very flimsy. Can the MacPro be secured in this way?

If a Mac Pro is viable security-wise, how about the performance of a computer that's at least 18 months old? Is such a buy a "good" buy?

Thanks.

I am really sorry for your loss. It sucks to be invaded.

The best way to thwart theft IMO is plenty of insurance and offsite backup. My current scheme is to insure everything under an umbrella policy and I rent a server rack locally for backup but online backup would easily do the trick.

If thieves want something, they will get it.

Luckily, nothing was stolen from my office, but I wouldn't count on my luck next time. My work place is self-insured so cost is not that much of an issue, but it's more the loss of data for confidentiality and convenience that bothers me: that's why I'm wondering how secure the old, aluminum MP enclosures are for security.

But what is the performance of these older machines like? I'm not a true power user, other than for photography. I see a lot of older Mac Pros from about 2009 to 2010 for sale from retailers with used equipment.
