Just got the iPhone for my birthday, HUGE surprise and very excited.

However, it came with a slight scuff/dent on the left side of the casing. Is this something worth replacing for or are slight imperfections expected?

If it's bothers you then yes, but don't make a big deal out of it. You don't want to make the person who gave it to you feel bad.

If they have to know about it, praise the gift then say, by the way I happened to notice...

Good luck and enjoy.

It's a new phone, you did nothing to damage it. I would try and get a new one as it sounds like it was defective out of the box? No reason to not return that imo.

Generally speaking I find any physical or other noticeable imperfections in new merchandise unacceptable. However if it's an "open box" purchase you may expect this sort of thing.

I got a replacement iPhone 2 days ago, and it had a small dent in the back...I'm just going to live with it....its very small, and everything else is perfect.

Also the people you talk to might try and say you did it.
