Perian for QuickTime not working with Yosemite?

Hi, I did just finish my Yosemite clean install and all seems well so far, except that I can not get Perian for QuickTime working. When I download the latest version (1.2.3) and open a .mkv file, it starts to convert it, but not to play. The same for .avi, QuickTime wants to convert it but not play directly. This is very annoying. Some body experienced the same or has a fix for me?
In the Finder when I click on "Go" and hold alt to reveal Library under Lion (10.7.) there was a folder Quicktime with Perian in it. Before my Yosemite clean install I copied this folder, but under Yosemite there is no such folder at all. Also the system does not try to access the folder, the date stays untouched. In System Preferences I got the Perian symbol after installation, but as mentioned it wants to convert the files to play them. When I deinstall Perian, then QuickTime does not allow me to open .mkv & .avi at all.
Has someone an idea?

Perian was discontinued a long time ago. This doesn't surprises me at all.

If I recall correctly, VLC will play OP's formats.

And, ditto Satcomer's comment: I've had Perian uninstalled for quite some time now.

Tell VLC to open .avi and .mkv files, Perian is sunsetted.

Thanks for your feedback guys. But how come, if I install Perian files are converted to play them via QuickTime, if I deinstall Perian QuickTime will not open them at all. My point is, that I maybe screw something up by moving those files manually in the first place, then I installed Perian on top and it may have caused the problem?
I find the idea nice to just use QuickTime to open all formats.
If there is anybody who has Perian working with 10.10, please let me know.

On a sidenote, which is the best media player to use with 10.10? Is VLC 10.10 ready or is there another better candidate?

Perian is outdated and useless now. That's why it doesn't really work even if Quicktime does seem to convert (or start to do so). VLC is the way to go for the type of files you were mentioning.

You didn't do anything wrong. If you deinstall perian, QuickTime will no longer even recognize the files and ask for a missing codec.

Based on my experience, the Perian codec suite works as well with QuickTime Player 7 under Yosemite as it did with any previous version of OS X. By this, I mean that it works flawlessly. When opening a Perian-reliant video within QuickTime X, the newer application launches a conversion utility that in turn attempts to update Perian. Of course, no such update exists.

That said, claims that Perian is now useless are nonsense. It appears that the cause of your problems is that you deleted some software as a part of your "clean install" that is required for Perian to function properly on your system. On my system, no such "clean install" has ever been performed. Perian works as well today under Yosemite as it did the day I setup my computer.

Hello MisterMe, thanks very much for your information.
With clean install I meant updating from 10.7 Lion to 10.10 Yosemite. I made a USB bootable update, allowing me to delete my entire SSD in my Air, then installing Yosemite basically from scratch. I moved and merged all files manually and it worked well. Now I am running a clean OS and basically I didn't do anything to QuickTime nor to Perian.
Under 10.7 Lion I found a folder in the Library named Quicktime and in it was Perian. This I copied to my external disc. Now under 10.10 Yosemite, no QuickTime folder exists for me in the Library, so I copied it there from my USB disc. Assuming I copied the plugin I checked under System Preferences for the Perian plugin, but it wasn't there. Then I downloaded the latest version I could find, 1.2.3. and installed it. (I double checked in System preferences in the Perian extension it also must say "installed".
It seems well so far, but when I started .mkv or .avi files, QuickTime opened and started to convert them to .mov. And it also worked, after conversion I could watch the movie, however, I don't want to convert each of my movies and also not into .mov.
Would it be possible for you to post some screenshots from your System Preferences and also from related folders in you Library folder?
I am quite keen to get up and running, every help is apprechiated. And as I said, nothing has been deleted of the OSX structure, it is a brand new installed OSX by now.

EDIT: I just found this in the internet.
"Important Note: Perian is no longer under development and does not work with QuickTime 10 or above. However, it still works with QuickTime 7.6.6."
OSX 10.10 has QuickTime 10.4 so I guess it will not be working? MisterMe, which QuickTime version do you use?

That is old news since Perian was discontinued on 23 July 2011, over 3 years ago.
