Upgraded to Catalina from Mojave.
Running disk utility on the internal SSD in an MBP 2018. It finds errors that need to be fixed in recovery.
Boot to recovery; no errors found
Back into OSX - errors still there, and Disk Utility refuses to run a first aid check.

The admin permissions on the ssd are fixed at read only and I can't change those.

The only significant bug I'm finding with Catalina is that my desktop and document folders don't sync properly to iCloud - I have a lot of files 'waiting to upload' and when I delete files, they bypass trash.

Have tried a bunch of command line fixes, SU boot etc, without success - anyone else finding the same issues, and is there a known fix/workaround?

I would start with repairing the home folder. Then do a recovery boot into the installer and do a clean install if that doesn't correct the situation. I never recommend upgrade installs with a DP or PB > ever

thanks - tried the repair, from every angle I can think of. No dice, looks like it's a fresh install. Might try Catalina again...

Yep, sorry you're having bad luck with it. I don't trust a DP as far as I can throw it in upgrade scenarios. Neither should anyone else for the simple reason that this isn't really an upgrade scenario with 10.15. It's a new rev of MacOS, I think the closest thing you can compare it to is maybe Tiger in the amount of under the floor boards and functional change to adapt to a new platform (back then intel32 and now intel64 that's going with it.

I tried Catalina on a fresh install, and still had tons of issues with iCloud:

  • Files missing/deleted that I had to recover on iCloud.com (probably related to the known issues in iOS13, not sure if Catalina has similar issues).
  • iCloud Drive files on the Desktop and other folders continuously downloading, then showing an icon that said "Uploading".
  • Intermittent errors about 'Couldn't communicate with a helper application.' at this point, no files would continue to download until after a restart.

Between that and the issues with Photos syncing, I decided to stick it out on Mohave for now. Back on Mohave everything downloaded as expected in terms of iCloud Drive and Photos, but that Catalina/iOS13 deleted/missing files in iCloud bug made me uncomfortable staying on Catalina on my mac.

I am having the same issues with the files bypassing trash. Just permanently being deleted. Only the files in the iCloud synced folders. All other files still will go to the trash if deleted.
I upgraded a brand new MBP from 10.14.6 to PB1. I found very few issues in regular use. I did the PB2 update and have been having multiple issues up and down the board. But the items you have been describing home folder permissions and trash issues, are the ones I am having as well.
Of course I am still going to stay on it and ride it through the end as I enjoy the challenge, I have a nice stable mid-2010 MBP 6.2 on 10.13 for my daily driver.

I’ve given up and returned to Mojave - need my laptop to be more stable than this for work, so I’ll wait until the end of the summer and try again when things are a bit more solid. Disk errors scare me as a consultant who travels...
