Just updated to Big Sur 11.4 ... thinking maybe is should just be called BS, but I digress.

I downloaded a 64 bit app to update firmware for a piece of astronomy equipment I have. BS won't let me do it, get the message "You do not have permission to open the application".

Checking the Get Info box on the app, it is not locked. I have read/write privilege as I am the Administrator on this computer.

Checking System Preferences -> Security and Privacy -> General, under "Allow apps downloaded from:" I have checked the radio button for "App store and identified developers".

Following a type from another user of this equipment, I created a folder titled "Panther" on my drive and dragged the contents of the firmware updater download to it. Then I ran the Terminal command:

sudo xattr -cr /Users/myusername/Documents/Astro/Panther

and entered my password. I still get the same message when launching the app.

Any ideas?

Two things you can try:
  1. Option-clickOption-double click the application's icon.
  2. Delete the downloaded application. Set up a new, clean Admin account. Log onto the new account. Download the application. See if you can launch it.
In any case, it can be useful to keep an "emergency" Admin account on your Mac for troubleshooting purposes. And if you are serious about security, you can also set up a non-Admin account to use for your day-to-day computing.

----------
ETA: launching an app is a double click.

Tried, failed.

I needed to get this firmware update done, so I had to admit defeat and borrow a Windoze laptop. Path of least resistance.

Tried, failed.

Interestingly, the app shows up as gray in the Finder. It is a 64 bit app too.
