Hi all

With iOS 10 installed on my iPhone 7 Plus I was able to connect both my iPad and Mac to my iPhone without having to open the ‘Personal Hotspot’ on my phone. However, with iOS 11 installed, whenever I try and connect my iPad or Mac to my iPhone without opening the Personal Hotspot menu, it fails to do so (I think the error is that the Personal Hotspot couldn’t be started, or something like that). The Personal Hotspot connects fine as soon as I open the Personal Hotspot menu.

Does anyone know how to fix this? I have tried restarting my devices multiple times.

Many thanks.

I had a very similar issue frequently in iOS 10. I needed to select the personal hotspot two or three times before it would fire up, but I could still launch it fully from the iPad (no action taken on the iPhone) by doing this.

I have upgraded my iPad Pro (2017 12.9) to 11 but not had time to upgrade my phone yet (7+); personal hotspot working perfectly at the moment.

Usually signing out of iCloud and back in both devices fixes this. Something gets out of whack (that’s the technical term) and this usually revolves it.

Can I safely sign out of iCloud on both devices when I don’t have a WiFi connection available or should I wait until I am back home? I use iCloud Photo Library and don’t want to find 16gb of Photos downloading on my mobile connection!

Yep, you should wait. Be careful how you answer when it asks if you want to delete things or leave them local too. However, in my experience, even when you retain them sometimes it will go ahead and reupload some or all of it again. Not all the time though.

Had the same issue on my iPad Pro (iOS 11.2B) , seems that the APN settings had been removed.
Easy to fix, just check what the settings should be with your carrier, and enter them in Settings -> Mobile Data -> Mobile Data Options -> APN Settings. Make sure that you fill in all three setting blocks (Mobile Data, LTE Setup, and Personal Hotspot).
DONE!

That must be either country or carrier specific, because I don’t have those settings on my devices?

What carrier do you have? I don’t have those settings on my US iPhone X from Verizon.
