is there anyway to keep hotspot on iOS 12 on my XS Max
I can switch it on but everytime I exit the hotspot screen it auto switches itself off
iOS 11 on my 7+ would stay on until I manually switched it off

Personally I could never keep it on even with iOS 11. However I use other Apple devices so I just used the instant hotspot feature to turn it on remotely. I'm guessing the devices you are connecting aren't Apple products?

Yes they are but never heard of it remotely
How do you set up.
I mostly use it with my iPad but occasionally a rMBP

Once I have a device connected, I can usually leave the hot spot screen and the devices will remain connected.
