Personal Websites: Purpose?

Right, well i started off trying to look for some help with my personal website that i re-did in iWeb, but after going over in my head what i thought people might ask, i decided: what was my website going to be about?

So, half-help, half-curiosity:

What are your personal websites for?

I suppose i could blog on anything under the sun...
 
i don't have one (i have neither the time nor desire) but my friend's has pictures and a description of what he's been up to. to give the entire story, he is traveling and this is his way of keeping everyone updated; it works well for him and i like seeing his latest snapshots and descriptions of activities.
 
I just have one to show off my kids pictures and what they're up to. The only people who check it are their grandparents.
 
I have a personal website to keep up with family and friends. I don't live near home anymore and I'm usually too busy to make calls everywhere around the world. It will be even more critical when I move even further away to Europe.
 
I just like having my own site, its good fun working on it/designing it. I also use it to share files among family/friends/etc. Oh, and I use it to show off my photography.:)
 
I use mine to keep my resume online (and, indeed, I've gotten headhunting calls out of nowhere at least twice--sure caught me off guard), and to dump any interesting project or tidbit of information I come up with.

It's not a blog, but I figure that there's a chance somebody is hunting for that same piece of info, and hopefully Google will lead them to it.
 
Well at the moment my web site is about my academic interests and I just put up a personal page (although there is nothing in it). But really it was to just have fun and use Rapid Weaver.
 
I will be using mine to help support my candidacy for public office. Which brings to light my next question, do you think iWeb is sufficient for something like that or are there better programs and things you would add out there?

This depends on what you want to do with the site. If you just want to "spread the word" then sure. If your looking to collect emails via a guestbook, post flash movies, imbed html etc... then probably not.
 
i suppose if you're into digital art then even a placeholder would look amazing. is there anything like iWeb for preset templates? RapidWeaver doesn't even come close.
 
My new year resolution was to make a website. I started today, and I guess already succeeded!
First, I simply wanted to make a website; I guess just because it's fun.
Then I had to think of a theme: reviewing programms and widgets.
It's based on a blog, and soon will have reviews even in german.

Mine is more of a way for people to keep tabs on me.

I tend to be a bit reclusive at times, so occassionally I will make a blog post so people know what I am up to (which can also be a decent outlet).

I also use it to share photos with people, I think that is what my friends go there for most.

No idea why I put the link to it in my signatures at web forums because the only people it would interest are those people who know me IRL.
 
I use mine to stroke my huge ego. :D

Actually, I used to use it to share photos mostly and carry a copy of my resume, but now it just sits there with no content since I have no time to keep it current. Ive messed with it so much, I burned myself out. I'll probably just let it die a slow death, and try to get some work in on my other money making ideas.
 
my main site (myname.com) is my portfolio and contact information. within that site i have a password protected subdomain - dev.myname.com, specifically for my clients (i am a graphic designer) to be able to upload/download files rather than trying to email them.

i have another subdomain, education.myname.com, that has my teaching philosophy, course syllabi, student work, workshop development, etc.

i also have another subdomain, process.myname.com, which i am just starting to slowly build an online archive of my past work that is focused on process, as opposed to just final "portfolio" quality work. this exists because...

...i have another subdomain, x.myname.com, that i am using as a framework for what i refer to as my "life's work" project, which is a research and design project that i intend to work on until i die. the point of this project is to develop a clear idea and maxim for my viewpoint on design theory, practice, and creation. it is online because i will be getting a lot of outside opinions and commentary from other designers and the like and this way it is accessible. the reason the above mentioned process archive is online is for the same reason; the life's work project will make reference to the process archive. the life's work and the process archive are just getting started this month.

i should note that i am not a web developer (not anymore anyway, that was another life) so these projects are strictly about the content as opposed to AJAX-y web 2.0 sexyness.
