A really strange problem occurred last night - 'phantom' message tones (on Halloween no less ).

So i'm cooking tea when I thought i heard my sms tone; I pull my iPhone 4 out of my pocket and checked it, but there was no message or notification. Must of imagined it i thought. But then I hear it again - even went right into the messages app, but nothing. I thought i was going mad, but i then put it on the table next to me and it went off again, no mistakes this time - it definitely played my sms tone (the only thing i used that tone for). I realise this has actually happened before now, a few day before but i just assumed at the time i had heard someone else's iphone. But this time there was no one for miles.

A few minutes later i actually got a few messages through. My partner arrived back home and said she sent them ages before i got them, around the time my phone set off a message tone.

So what is going on here then? I always find long delays in receiving iMessages. Could the phone actually be receiving them and playing a tone, but not visually notifying or displaying the message for a while after?

Anyone else heard of this happening?
