Philips DVP642 DVD Player playing DVD-Rs

I burned a DVD-r with AVI files on it. My Philips DVP642 player can play AVI files, but it didn't from my DVD-r. It does play them from CD-r's though. Any ideas on how I can get DVD-r's to work on my Philip's DVP642?
