I have a jailbroken iphone 2G, which has worked like a dream from day 1.
The screen became unresponsive so naturally I tried the usual reboot, and reset (home button and on/off button) and this didn't solve the problem.

I then connected the iphone to my mac, and tried a software reset from iTunes. iTunes tells me that I need to enter the 4-digit passcode to unlock the phone prior to resetting, however I can't do this because the screen is unresponsive...

So I'm trapped. Is there any way out of this?
I'd appreciate any help..

I don't know or care how the screen became responsive, maybe a software issue, maybe a broken connection, thats what I'm trying to establish. The key point is that until I need to unlock the phone so that I can see if a reset/restore can get the screen working again.

Any useful help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

well I guess I could dig around in the loft for an afternoon for the original receipt scan and email it to you, but thats a bit extreme just to get some help fixing my phone don't you think?

Okay, I'll take your thief accusation on the chin as you've kindly given me a potential fix. Thanks for that.

It wasn't an accusation as much as it was a joke:)
Try the DFU, and if that doesn't work, post back.
