After calling voice mail, I locked the phone with the button on top. After that, the home button nor the top button would turn it on, I tried to reset/turn off but no luck.

It wasn't until after I hooked it up to my computer that it even showed anything on the screen, after which I turned it off and back on. Now it works fine, but...

what the hell happened?

This has happened to me at least once a week and its anoying. The only to get it going again is to charge it overnight then hope that it turns on in the morning. Its happened even if the juice is decent. It doesnt happen to everyone I know (that owns one) except for me :( The good thing is that Ive gotten it going again after every black-out :p
Also I thought if I rebooted the phone it would last longer and at times it has.
I wouldnt get the black-out as frequent but its still happening :p
Im not sure if its worth taking in for warranty.

Wirelessly posted (David's Black 16GB iPhone 3G: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5G77 Safari/525.20)

Have you tried a restore and a full restore. By full restore I mean not restoring from a backup.

Take it to an Apple Store, have them run a diagnostic. It could be faulty hardware. A friend of mine had his phone replaced due to faulty hardware causing frequent (though relatively unnoticeable to the end user) wireless radio resets.
