my friend gave me his first gen iphone, he got the new one. AT&T wants a butt load of money for a deposit for me to open an account. What are my options people? they ATT guy put a sim in it, and the main screen says all i can do is make an emergency phone call, my friend wiped the phone off before he gave it to me. any suggestions. I am currently a Sprint customer

You just need to unlock it, dump the AT&T and insert your Sprint sim. Check the tutorials at the top of this iPhone Hacks board. Shouldn't take you longer than an hour.

Edit: Apologies. I'm not from the US..didn't realise it's not possible to use Sprint on iPhone.

You can not run an iPhone on Sprint. Search for jailbraking; you can use it on T-Mobile.

Actually, that's impossible. Sprint uses CDMA ATT uses GSM. No way to make a GSM iPhone work on a Sprint network.

Might want to read up before you start giving out bad advice. Just saying.

I must have changed my post while you were replying. I didn't realise there were networks in the US that don't use GSM.

OK, despite all that, it's still good advice to unlock it and use a non-contract-SIM, whether that's still with AT&T or with another GSM carrier. It just won't be Sprint.

Assuming that it is not already updated to 3.0, follow these steps:

1. Put the phone into DFU mode and update to 3.0 through iTunes. See this clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ofpinyGlQ8I

2. Run RedSn0w to jailbreak and unlock, using this tutorial:

3. Insert carrier's SIM, enjoy your unlocked iPhone ;)
