This is our local news channel here in New York. I’m wondering if anyone has used this thing and does it do any damage to our phones?

Why would it hurt your phone? It uses ultraviolet light to sanitize the phone. My Sonicare uses the same thing to disinfect the brush head...

There has to be a certain amount of heat given off by the light. You can’t just tell me turning on a light cleans things.

For me this is a waste of time and money. Your phone can't be pristine clean every minute and you'd have to do this every day if you really care that much about germs (though basic cleaning with wipes can do 99% of the job).

Have one, love it. I own it for the same reason that I wash my hands.

Have had one for a few years. Makes me feel better. Phones been fine. Sometimes depending on case you use you will “smell” it after it’s been in there - faintly but just on the case.
