When I connected, it prompted me to update iTunes, which I did. But it had errors, it then went to do the iPhone software update, which ended up frozen, with the Apple Logo you see in Boot mode.

I unplugged it from the USB and plugged it into the wall, hoping it would sort itself out, and it came back with the Image to connect to iTunes.

It tells me my phone is in recovery mode and cannot sync. It then prompts me to reinstall the entire phone, and all media will be lost... yada yada.... I attempt that, and it fails as well.

I have a brick ..... I can't even reboot it by holding down the power button.

???

Well I've been at it for hours now, apparently there's no hope.

Brought it up in DFU mode, supposedly the last resort, still get error 6 during install.

So far, I've not been happy with Apple quality. I had major software issues with iTunes (after 1 hour on Phone support to India, I got disconnected), and now with the iPhone.

If Apple/ATT will let me switch phones, I plan to ....

When I tried it on my laptop (Vista) it worked? What about this process is machine-specific?

Well, with the iPod and iPhone, I've come to realize that Apple is no better than any other software company ... they've got their issues just like everyone else.
