Hello,

My verizon contract will finally be done with next week and I am planning on switching to AT&T because of it's GSM tech, which will finally allow me to make emergency phone calls when traveling. (T-mobile might have been okay but has terrible coverage where I live.)

I am of course totally interested in the iPhone, but at the same time have no need for a small media player. I have my 80gig video iPod for that, and do not want to drain batteries of a phone by using it for video and whatnot. Whatever phone I get should have e-mail and at least light web capabilities.

So the question is, is the iPhone worth it if will (almost) never be used as a media device? If not, do you guys have any suggestions? I've been lost in verizon-land for two years and really have no idea what devices are good.

-Thanks!

It depends on what's the most important thing to do with your phone other than calling.

There are various "niche" phones which seem to cater more to certain wants than others...

I travel abroad a lot, so I switched from Verizon to Cingular years ago because of the GSM capability (and unrestricted BlueTooth phones). When I travel, I used to carry a cell phone, PDA and iPod. Now I just carry an iPhone which does all those things, that's one device and one charger, instead of three of each. Plus, I didn't have Safari or email with my old equipment, so now I can do things like check in online for flights without having to have my laptop with me. And I can do it while riding in the cab to the airport!!!

The iPhone automatically adds the necessary international prefix when dialling home from overseas too, which is very nice. Google maps helps me get from place to place (e.g. when in Paris or London, I can see if my next appointment is walkable, or if I need to take cab or subway).

I also have a high-capacity iPod, but this is a compliment to my iPhone, not replaced by it. The iPhone is a highlight reel of my iTunes library, but the big boy has the whole lot. If I'm going to want all my music I can take both, leaving the iPod locked up in the hotel safe while I'm out and about.

As a frequent business traveller, the iPhone has changed my life. In just over a week!
