got a strange problem.
trying to enable the "update listening history" setting for Apple Music within the "home" app.

enabling it then asks to setup "hey siri" on the phone

however, no matter how many times i say "hey siri" it doesn't move past this screen.
the siri logo changes to show that it can hear me, but no matter what i do it won't progress.

siri works when i talk to it when i initiate it manually, and the homepod mini responds to "hey siri" just fine.

any ideas what the problem is?

Might be time to do a erase and reset as a new phone. Have you already tried resetting all settings? What version of iOS are you running by the way?

it is/was a new phone though at the point everything was set up.
not had an iphone previous to this.

it's running iOS 14.7 (and previously 14.6)

I would still at least reset all of the settings. This won't remove any content however. You never know, maybe the update broke something. Hey Siri worked for me on 14.7 and 14.7.1 before I jumped to iOS 15. If it still won't work after the reset, I would ask Apple if you still are in warranty. They would tell you to reset the phone in that case anyway as part of the diagnostic process.

what does "reset all settings" do?

it hasn't ever worked even when in iOS 14.6. the phone was bought May 2021, so it definitely still in warranty, however wiping the phone isn't very desirable as it will require having to set everything back up again (as surely they won't advise a restore from icloud backup as that would just restore it back to a broken state?)

what's strange is that my apple watch and the homepod responds to "Hey siri" just fine, could the homepod be interfering with this? (I have tried setting it up away from the homepod too). and clearly the phone is hearing me say "hey siri" as the orange microphone light is on, and the siri "ball" changes shape as i speak.

The reset all settings will restore all of the configurations back to factory default but will not remove any of the user data.

With that said, if it didn’t work from the beginning, I would definitely take it into an apple store if you can. Something is probably not right to begin with. Have you had any other issues besides this? Seems like it could be a microphone issue but I would think you would have had other issues if that was the case.

no other issues at all
if I initiate Siri manually (press and hold power button) then there are no issues.

The only issue is enabling “hey Siri” on the iPhone

Just for fun - have you already tried this?

Power down your apple watch.

Unplug your HomePod Mini.

Try "Hey Siri" from your iPhone again.

i tried that and also no luck.

however i have managed to get it to work, i had to put on a phoney west coast american accent though to get to complete the "hey siri" setup.

now that it is setup it responds in my normal accent, so not sure why the setup process is xenophobic :)

That is really odd but hey, at least you were able to fix the issue. Siri has become better from years ago but it is still not perfect and still I have issues with it not understanding me. Unfortunately, voice recognition in general is still far from perfect.

That sounds really gnarly, dude! Hope it didn't harsh your mellow. Surf's up!

Offtopic, but I had something similar on the initial release of Catalina on my 2018 13-inch MacBook Pro, ended up just restoring the Mac from scratch and it worked. It surprised me how often I use the function, despite Siri being... lacking.
