Hi y'all. I lost my phone yesterday. So it looks like time to get a new one. I was trying to wait to see if mac would put out a device like blueberry or treo - but it looks like I have to act now. Ideally, I'd like something that can take care of e-mail, replace my palm, be bluetooth compatible, and of course function as a phone. (If blueberry is better, I'll forego its pda functions and just keep my palm.) What would make it perfect for me is if I could send a microsoft word and picture attachment with e-mails as well. (I'm an actor and have to send out headshots all the time.) Is there anything that can do all that?

I'm guessing treo is going to be most mac compatible - but wanted to ask for your experiences? What do you use? Do you like it? How's it work with the mac? Thanks so much.
 
I use a Treo 650 and it works great with my Mac. I sync it via Bluetooth with iCal & Address Book--no problem!
 
Symbian OS-based phones (e.g., Nokia Series 60 phones) are generally more Mac friendly than Palm. As you know with Palms, you are largely dependent on Palm Desktop application.

Except for some newer models (in which case you may need nova media iSync plug-in or tinker with some files), many Symbian phones just work out of the box and provide a bit tighter integration with iSync.

Nokia N80, E61, and E70 are some of the examples (I like these because they all have Wi-Fi). Just be warned that E61 is camera-less and E70 is triband (available in either US-friendly 850/1800/1900 or Europe/Asia-friendly 900/1800/1900).

As for so-called Mac phone/PDA, I am sure something is in development (probably not PDA though), but I would not count on it coming anytime really soon.

Yes, and they are all annoying rumors. There is not much proof that it will happen at all, and if it does it isn't happening tomorrow.
 
i am curious as well...i have been eyeing an upgrade from my ROKR to a treo 650.

anyways I also love nokia's phones. the symbian os is really nice and flawless imo.

they are tough as well.
 
Do the Nokia and Sony Ericson phones have the ability to do e-mail? That's the big thing I'm trying to accomplish - a phone that can do e-mail. (like a trio or blueberry)

Someone just told me about a new motorola device (Q maybe?) Anyone know if that's mac compatible?
 
I'm not sure what service you use but I've heard good things about the Motorola Q. I'm not sure if it's compatible with macs, but I think MissingSync might be able to fix that

Oh, and right now, I use verizon. Though I'm certainly not wed to them.

Yes, but it obviously isn't as well implemented as a blackberry. It can check POP3 and I believe IMAP, and compose messages/send attachments.
 
actually i believe there will be an iphone. i have a friend who had to escort a motorola executive and he told him about the comings of a pda type motorola and itunes phone. the exec also showed him the Q a month before release

I have the Nokia E61 and it does mail. Very well. For a while I'd been carrying a Blackberry 7520 and a Motorola V600, but when I saw the E61 I knew that was the device that would finally allow me to consolidate. It does everything I need: mail, calendar, a modem for my ibook, and it gets considerably better phone reception than my V600 and Blackberry.

For mail I'm currently using the ActiveSync "push" e-mail solution which is hosted for free at mail2web.com. The E61 is capable of handling true push mail from a few different services (Blackberry being one of them).

The Blackberry is still the best messaging device around, but the E61 is a better overall device for me. The E61 does have it's quirks, but the positives far outweigh the negatives...

Another vote here for Sony Ercisson phones

My T610 sync'd perfectly.. and this week I went out and bough a W810i

Great UI!
Great synchronisation!
 
My V3 Razr syncs just fine. No phone since this was released has really grabbed my attention, nor given me any reason to upgrade. Despite all the complaints about it, it is fine at doing what it is for...making and receiving phone calls.

You'd be looking for an Apple phone or PDA, Apple makes Macs, Macs are computers not a separate company.

I reckon they probably will but not for a while, the arse has kinda fallen out of the PDA market, they've combined them with phones a la the O2 and Treos and stuff but for the average consumer the PDA is not really a common purchase.

I think they'll put out something to rival Motorola's iTunes phones, something sleek, cool, a good UI and a proper iTunes client - but not for a while.

Sony-Ericsson phones are pretty good from what I hear, I have a Motorola L6 and it syncs up nicely with everything.

My SE w810i can send and recieve e-mail (just tried, including a picture as an attachment). It is similiar to w800i and K700/K750, so I assume they can too.
 
Morning guys...I may need to start a new thread here, but what the hell.

I've got a Moto v551, and I read some stuff on here (Pretty old posts) before on how to get it to work with sync...but to no avail. I was wondering if anyone else might have had any luck.

I can't find the thread that I tried before.

Okay, I went to verizon store today. If I stick with verizon, my choices are blackberri, motorola q, and treo 650 or 700. I've been reading some great reviews of 700p online (though it's damned expensive). Any of you try this with your mac? Are you pleased?

Although it doesn't look like you are considering one, Symbian-based phones usually sync flawlessly with Macs. My recently-broken N-Gage QD, which runs Symbian Series 60, was kept up to date with iCal and Address Book through iSync with no problems at all. I'll probably be replacing it with a T-Mobile SDA (running Windows Mobile 5), which doesn't have Mac support yet but will hopefully be gaining iSync compatibilty relatively soon.

Can you explain what a Symbian based phone is - and which carriers use them?
