I have 1500+ photos on my ip4. I have been wanting to find a good folder to make albums.

So, time is up, I give up on the iP4 with 4s due in shortly
Question is if iOS5 has improve this minor oversight in os4.

While I'm not quite sure what you mean, you can now create additional folders right on your iDevice and move images into them

Yep. I just got done arranging my photos into folders.

It can be a bit tedious since you have to manually check each photo to place it in an album.

Does the picture also have to remain in your Camera Roll?

I selected a bunch of pictures in Camera Roll and moved them into new folders. Then the photos were located in two places. I went to delete them from my Camera Roll, but I get a message warning that they'll be deleted from both places.

I think it's silly to keep them in two places. Is there a way around this? I checked the settings but there's no mention of duplicates, etc.

That's exactly what I was coming here to post about. I created a new folder/album to hold all of my wallpapers that I like to use. I got them in the camera roll and then decided to move them over but wanting to delete the one in the camera roll wasn't an option. It wanted to delete the original and the new one in the wallpapers album. I find it funny/odd that you got to keep multiple copies of the photo, weird.

Hmm. Well, this is generally good news to keep from having to have a different app to handle photos.

As far as there being duplicates, it sounds like the early days of iPhoto and iTunes that resulted in duplicate files. VERY frustrating. But, I think it was resolved in both of those programs to just put a pointer to the original in the Roll.

I know this is how Picasa handles it on the PC. I can put the file in as many albums as I want, but it only resides in one place, the main folder.

Maybe you get the message because you were trying to delete the original. Did you get a message that both would be deleted when you attempted to delete the one from the new folder? If not, then it sounds like the one in the folder is just a shortcut, which is fine.

It is ok to keep the camera roll intact, and we can have one picture in multiple folders.

So, can anybody shed some additional light on how pictures are handled in the folders?

Thanks!

Yeah, I get the message when I try to remove the one from Camera Roll. I was hoping to clean out the Camera Roll folder by sorting the pictures into albums, but this is not the way they have the app set up. Basically the originals must stay in Camera Roll and they're just copied to the folders you create. I'd rather be able to physically move the files out of Camera Roll. Otherwise it's just like a tagging system. Oh well, I'll learn to live with it. ;)

This wasn't quite what I was originally hoping for either, but I have to admit it's not entirely unexpected since that's how iPhoto works too. In iPhoto you have the "Photos" category, where all photos are contained regardless of what Albums or Events you add them to. If you delete something from Photos, it's removed everywhere else as well.

In iOS 5 the Camera Roll and Photo Library are your "Photos" equivalent, for pictures taken with / on the iPhone and pictures imported into the iPhone, respectively.

Man, this is sooooo frustrating. Sometimes I have to wonder what the heck the designers are thinking when they make something stupid like this. Would it have been so hard to also have a "move" selection rather than "add"?

As other posters have stated above, the camera roll contains the actual photo files, then folders you create are just "sharing" those same files with the camera roll, there are not actually 2+ copies of the same photo every time you add it to a folder. Notice that after you add photos to folders, it doesn't use any additional storage on your phone, or in your iCloud backup.

Think of the camera roll as the huge collection, and the folders as different tags that you add to the photos. IMO this works fine, though if you have a huge camera roll (my wife has 1100 photos) it gets a little frustrating scrolling through a ton of photos to find what you want if it isn't in a folder already.

I must be missing something here - why not just download all the photos in camera roll to your laptop then just organise them into seperate folders as required by date, subject etc and put all these seperate folders into the one photo folder that is synced to iTunes. That's how I transfer all my laptop pics to my Touch. Then when starting the photo app, camera roll appears at the top as usual and below is each of the other sub folders.

Yup. The "improvements" in Photo Management appear to have been designed by interns at Apple. And not the best interns by any means. Nope, there is still no way to prevent the Camera Roll from growing to gargantuan dimensions. Yes, it's all infuriating.

But now that I can create an album on my iPad (Yippee!) rather than managing it all completely on my PC, I have a question.

Here I was trying to see just what I can do to move photos out of the Camera Roll to another album. And yes, I found I couldn't do it. So now I simply want to eliminate the test album I created for test purposes.

IS THERE ANY WAY TO DELETE AN EMPTY ALBUM????

I'm not asking for much. I know that the Camera Roll is some sort of sacred site that can never be touched unless I want to eliminate each and every photo (and every other image that various apps stick in there.) I'm willing to accept that. But can I not get rid of the d**n albums I've created once I've eliminated the photos from them?

I'm expecting the answer to be that I now have to go back to iTunes and and my PC (or the cloud) and manage it all from there. But I still harbor a forlorn hope that it's my stupidity and not that of the almighty Apple Corporation that has led to this ridiculous situation.

My nomination for understatement of the week, especially in view of the fact that many apps stick images in the "Camera Roll" whether they're photos or not.

Long live the supremacy of the "Camera Roll." It may not be a "roll." It may contain many images that have nothing to do with a "camera." But it will never ever be subject to the management desires of a mere user. It is supreme.

I've tested deleting newly-created albums on both of my devices and it works.

On the iPhone: In Photos, I hit the Edit button in the upper right corner, then a circular red minus sign appears next to each album name. If I hit that, a Delete button appears and lets me trash the created folder. It lets me delete both empty and occupied folders.

On the iPad: Go into your Photos, then make sure you select the Albums tab at the top. Then hit Edit in the upper right corner, and a black X will appear on the corner of each folder you created. Hit this and it will confirm the deletion of the folder.

I'm using an iPhone 4 and a first-gen iPad, if that makes any difference.

Thanks, very much. In fact that's exactly the way I'd expect it to work. And not being a complete idiot I tried that several times yesterday. Apparently rebooting was required on my iPad to get the deletion confirmation dialog. It works now.

So now, I'll just confine myself to my other complaints about not being able to move images out of the Camera Roll. ;)
