Photo app is only in its "selection" mode

I have an issue with the photo app on my iPad running iPadOS 16. It seems like a bug that prevents me from viewing any photo. Whenever I tap on an image, it just selects it and shows a blue check mark.

It's been like this for a while and I don't know when it started to happen. I tried restarting the iPad, updating the app, and clearing the cache, but nothing worked. Does anyone have a solution for this problem?

I reported it to Apple already, but no response yet.

I don't have an iPad to test, but a couple things:

1. When you said you tried updating the Photos app, was there actually an update available that you installed?

2. Have you tried actually quitting the Photos app and then reopening it, using these instructions:

Quit and reopen an app on iPad

On iPad, if an app isn’t responding, try quitting and reopening it.
