Hi,

after reading here for some time, I am now having a question for a problem, that bothers me for some time.

I am a long time Aperture user and switched to Capture One 1 year ago (still missing Aperture the DAM part of Aperture)

In addition I use the Photos App to sync my photos with my mobile devices. I export the Photos from Capture One und import them as referenced photos into the Photos App.

That works in principle, but over the time I noticed, that the Photos App Library size increases way to much (Currently 64GB with mostly referenced images). Further investigation showed, that all my referenced images are duplicated full size in the "resources/media" path of the library.

There really is no point in having a referenced library when alle referenced images are duplicated into the library... Is this a known problem and is there a solution for this behavior?

Thanks for your help!

Did something change? it was the case that a referenced Photos library could NOT sync with iCloud; only the managed ("copy into") "system library" could do that, and AFAIK couldn't sync referenced images.

And Photos must make previews and thumbnails of referenced images in any case. But I dunno how that would explain full-sized images in the library, unless that's maybe a remnant of its use synching with iCloud, if that's what you were doing.

The problem is that it's really hard to resolve issues like this with Photos, since you don't have a lot of control over it. Maybe create a second library and do some experimenting.

I am using only iTunes sync, the fastest internet access I can get here ist 16/1MBit, uploading images to the cloud is no real fun with that.

No, I never used iCloud photo sync, not even for trying it out. After import my Aperture library, my Photo App library hat roughly the same size as the Aperture library (18GB), over the time it increased to 65GB at the moment. I added images during this time, but not anywhere that much.

If I knew any other good local image sync solution I would simply switch to that and quit using the Photos app, maybe I should reactivate Aperture for that...

Weird, my Photos is doing the same. Set to not import to library, yet there's a "Masters" folder full of originals. As there's no longer a "show in finder" command, I have no idea if that master is being used or the referenced original.

I could find out a lot more by booting off my clone and playing with it. But frankly, I find Apple software so poor these days, I assume it's a bug. One that will never get fixed. And not worth spending time chasing down. Mine is using 50 gb, I'll live with it.

I deleted all my backups, turned off photo sharing then did a backup.
I did a restore afterwards using the backup with no photos on.
Next minute my photos that i deleted are getting downloaded to my phone, i left it over night so only found out about it in the morning, over 14,000 photos i thought i had deleted.
This is the second phone it has happend to.
