Hi. I have an iPhone 6S Plus. It has no SIM card. I have no clue of how to really use it. It is my $800 camera!

I would like to know...

1.) What are the dimensions (in pixels) of a portrait photo?

2.) What are the dimensions (in pixels) of a landscape photo?

3.) What are the dimensions (in pixels) of a square photo?

4.) What are the dimensions (in pixels) of a portrait video?

5.) What are the dimensions (in pixels) of a landscape video?

Thanks!!

Have you tried a web search?

I know nothing about smartphones. Didn't know if it was a function of hardware or software.

It took me 10 seconds to search this, man.

From my iPhone 6s Plus, the resolution of photo taken from the back camera is 4032x3024, and from front camera is 2576x1932.

The back camera is the one for selfie's, right? If so, why is it better resolutions than the camera used for taking pictures of the outside world?

Sounds like the dimensions are a function of the hardware? Or can they be changed?

I wish my pictures could be more rectangular like in film 24 x 36, 6 x 9, etc

The front camera is on the face of your iPhone, selfie-time --- facing you.
The back camera is, well, on the back of your iPhone. That's for your normal pictures/videos.

Since I see my iPhone as a camera, I think like a photographer and not like a cellphone user.

Thanks for the clarification! :D

I hope you didn't pay $800 for it recently.

I bought it in Fall 2016.

If you see your iPhone as a camera first, use a third-party app which will give you greater than the built-in app (which is like shooting Program Mode on a point-and-shoot camera). Some photographers refer to this as PHD Mode ("Press Here Dummy").

😀

Not knowing anything about mobile, how would I do that?

The iPhone is actually shooting full-frame 16:9 but is cropping the resulting still image to 4:3 aspect ratio.

There are better apps that will let you shoot 16:9 and save the resulting image that way.

Oh wow!! That would be great!

I know the Camera+ app will do this with recent models. So should the highest rated "pro" photo apps like Halide, Moment, ProCamera, et al. A lot of these apps also give you more control over settings like depth-of-field, white balance, exposure, etc.

When I shoot with my DSLR, I *always* shoot manual.

Not sure how practical it is to try and change settings on a smartphone, but it can't hurt!

Note that all digital cameras technically shoot RAW, but non-dSLRs will do automatic conversion to a lossy format when saving. Some of these apps will also write RAW files with the right iPhone models.

I was also wondering about that... So there is no way currently for me to shoot in RAW mode (i.e. non-JPG)?

From there, you can crop, edit, whatever to your heart's delight using whatever photo editing software you prefer.

Right now I just use Nikon ViewNX=i which seems to be good enough. I hope in the near future to re-learn Photoshop.

It sounds like you would benefit from taking the basic iPhone photography class at Sessions (Apple Store). Those courses are free. If you get lucky, you might be the only course attendee and it would be a one-hour one-on-one session.

How do I take advantage of that?

Thanks for all of the tips above. Now I am making some serious progress!
