Here is a jpg I stumbled across of what I wish Apple would come up with. It's be pretty cool and I'd buy one in a heartbeat!

A good illustration of how the screen-hogging OS X interface may be great for selling bigger and bigger displays, but would make no sense on a tiny display. On a PDA, every pixel counts... no room for brushed metal.

OP got the exact name of the 3rd gen of iPad, "The New iPad"!

Compare with the real "The New iPad"...:p

Slightly off topic, but what typeface did Apple use in the late 90's-early 2000's, such as the one in that old iPad mockup in the OP?

Wow that's crazy. Awesome thread resurrection! Considering how many people were mad at the name "iPad" when it was first announced, I find it pretty funny that someone did a mockup with that name so long ago!

I remember back in 2009 when iPad rumors were floating about. Everyone thought it would be something like a Surface Pro, which would run OS X and cost $1000.

Interesting how fate turned out. :p

I had always wanted the iPad to be more of a "macbook touch". Not one of those PC notebooks with screen that flips around and lays flat. But one where the display is built into where the physical keyboard and trackpad are currently and has full I/O like USB, TB, HDMI, MagSafe, headphone jack and (back then) even an optical drive. And it would run full OSX like the Mac does instead of iOS.

Kinda like this:
