Mrs MacRy has kindly bought me some cheap flash equipment for Xmas and I was allowed to set it up and take a couple of shots to make sure it all worked.

It was my first ever attempt at off camera flash. I don't really know what I'm doing and I had ten minutes to play, but I'm quite pleased with the results. Really looking forward to being able to have a real go at it on Xmas day.

Certainly looks better than my attempts at off camera flash...:)

Must be the time for testing out new gear. I got the opportunity to test out my new 10 stop ND filter yesterday. This is the only picture I've taken with it by itself as I immediately stacked it with my variable ND filter to see how long and clean I could get the exposures. Surprisingly, the 10 stop by itself is nice and clean, when coupled with the variable it goes a little magenta, but the variable by itself is clean until you get to its limit and then it casts blue!

It's amazing how quickly time goes when you are taking long exposures!

This is my first snap, with just the 10 stop and at a mere 40 seconds, it's a quicky. Just starting to get some cloud blur, but the clouds were very slow moving yesterday. Will close down the aperture as this is at f/11 and play with longer times, using just the 10 stop by itself.

Curious. Which 10 stop are you using? I'm looking at one as my next gear purchase and have been torn between something fancy, like the Lee system, with holder and all, or a simple screw-on 77mm (my lens thread size) filter.

I like it MacRy - it's very moody and still reminds me of a Guy Ritchie film. ;) Looking forward to seeing what you do with new lighting gear.

Foul weather and dark days have arrived here so I recently bit the bullet with some flash equipment. It sure beats the days of flash bulbs (yes, I'm old enough to have used those) and pop-up flash.

Fancy is good with a 10 stop (IMO) and screw-on is not that simple. You can't focus or even see through one of these. The Lee system means that you can set-up for the shot and slide it into place then adjust exposure and you're good to go.

I was shooting with my screw-on 10 stop a few months ago and in the course of screwing-on and screwing-off and screwing-on and screwing-off...it slipped out of my fingers and into the river - gone.

Hi all, first time posting in this thread. Hopefully I don't get booed out of the building with my pics :). I took this shot when my wife and I were on our honeymoon in Italy in September. We were on a short boat cruise along Cinque Terre and on the way back to shore I saw a couple moving in for a kiss.

You guys have posted some really awesome shots. Any feedback you have would be appreciated!

Great shot castles00 and welcome to the POTD thread...glad to have you here.

Very nice...

Great shot. Those guys are nuts. The college reminds me of Hogwarts.

Mrs Apple fanboy never let's me play with my Christmas things early :(

Off camera flash is a real dark art to me. Something for the future. Looking forward to seeing the results post Christmas.

Welcome to the Forum. A great start. I look forward to seeing more of your work.

Someplace I'd rather be. I hate winter. This picture just makes me feel warmer.

I went with the 77mm screw on Hitech ProStop IRND filter. Mainly because they guaranteed no colour cast and the ease of convenience to carry. I was a bit hesitant at first about using a screw-on and it adjusting my focus, but I'm pretty gentle and very aware of my focus. You can get those rubber bands that help stop lens creep if you are really concerned about this.

Great point raised, Peter! I didn't even think about the cold and the problems of using this sort of gear with gloves on. It's a nice, sunny day in Paradise! :p

Lol. I never try to be moody. That's my natural expression mixed with confusion over what I'm doing.

Mrs MacRy let me have a play so I wouldn't be disappointed on Xmas day if it didn't work as I went down the cheap and cheerful route.

Off camera flash definitely looks tricky but it's something I'm really curious about and eager to try and master. I'm excited to be giving it a go, although my poor family will probably have less enthusiasm after being blinded constantly over the Christmas period.

Oh and here is one of the lovely Mrs MacRy begrudgingly helping me test it even though she hated doing it because she claimed to have not been looking at her best.

Bridge2Bridge paddle today. I was very slow but there was a strong headwind.

These were the rental kayaks lined up on the beach before the race. Seeing them like this always makes me want to get in one of them.

This is a quick 4 second capture taken last night, that I used to play in Lightroom only, no plug-ins were used, just trying to emulate some arty-farty types... I now know that I'll have to export to Photoshop for the use of layers and some other things.

Strong image, mate. Better than most of the photos you see here. :)
I like the wide crop and i have a little suggestion: try not to center your subject.
