Photo Stream on Vacation

Hi, looking for some advice. I'm taking a three week vacation to England and am bringing my iPhone as my only camera. 16gb model, and I take a lot of pictures. I'll have an iPad with me (also 16gb) and have a MacBook to be left at home but turned on.

It is my understanding that if I take photos all day long, back up to photostream at the end of the day when on wifi, I am limited to 1,000 photos in the cloud. Can I set up photostream on the MacBook to automatically import every day? My other issue is photostream continues to take up space, so if I turn photostream on and of daily on the iPhone will the pictures still be backed up on my other devices?

My inlaws are planning to also use their iPhone but will not have a computer powered at home.

Grateful for any advice!
 
You can setup iPhoto on the Macbook to auto import Photostream photos into a camera roll. After that is done each day or so, you can just manually delete the photos from Photostream in iPhoto and that will remove them.

I would just make sure you are backing up the Macbook, since now that is the only place you have the photos.

The issue I'd have is I won't have physical access to the Macbook. They would presumably be loading every night when the iphone is in wifi mode, and if I clear the photo stream every night from the iphone and then turn it on the next evening, I assume it will automatically upload that day's pictures?
 
Apple clearly states that Photo Stream isn't meant as a backup for you photos.

What you should do is set up your MacBook as you think you'll leave it while you're on vacationa and then test it for a couple of days. One thing you shouldn't do is touch your MacBook while the test is going on.

Oh... I thought from your comment you were going to have the Macbook with you. If you leave iPhoto running and the Macbook set to never sleep that should work. But like Bear said, I would do a test run for a couple days first.
 
Beware, Photo Stream will occasionally miss photos from your iPhone. E.g., you take 20 photos, get connected to wifi, and Photo Stream will only pick up 19 of them. Those numbers are completely arbitrary; you could wind up taking 1000 photos before it misses one, but the point is that eventually one (or more) will not get picked up. If you want to mitigate this risk, then every night, after you have given Photo Stream a chance to automatically upload, go in and check the Photo Stream photos against those in your camera roll. If you identify any that didn't upload automatically, you can manually upload them yourself to a separate stream (it will appear alongside the default "My Photo Stream"). When you get back home, you can consolidate everything into iPhoto on your Mac
