Photographs in Text Messages on iphone 3Gs

Is it possible —finally—to attach photos to text messages through MMS on the iphone 3Gs? According to David Pogue (iphone:the Missing Manual, p. 84), there should be a camera icon next to the box where you send your text messages. I do not find this icon present. Also, in the photo app, I do not find an MMS box like the E-mail box that I can click on to attach a photo. Is this feature not operative as yet, or am I missing something

If you have the photo taken already then go to 'photos' on your iphone and select the photo you want to send. Hit the forward button in the bottom right of the screen and select MMS.

Heh. The above works everywhere except for the US, which is where I suspect you to be from. MMS in the United States goes live on September 25th.

I should have thought about that. Yeah Im in the UK, since 3.0 has been I have been able to send and receive MMS without any problems.

What is the hold up about?

AT&T is the holdup. They've finally announced a September 25th date and an (faux) apology for the delay, but they weren't ready when 3.0 was announced.

In fact, I felt quite sophisticated in using such a high-tech term. This isn't the first time I've been scolded for not knowing that I was treading on familiar ground. I suppose it won't be the last time either, although I'm a fast learner, considering the circumstances

You're going to get reamed for asking any kind of MMS question about the iPhone right now. Don't take it personally.

But, as someone else pointed out, after September 25th Pogue's instructions will be spot on.

Well, thanks to all of you for your compliments. I suppose I'm somewhat different from most people my age because I was a college professor and didn't retire unril the age of 70. As all of you probably know, life in a university today would be difficult for those who don't know how to use a computer. Nevertheless, I did have an office mate, a renowned Shakespeare specialist, who simply couldn't learn how to send an E-mail. I never understood this

I've used cell phones (mobile phones to you who are British) almost from the time they first became practical for the general public. This is my second iphone. I don't use it much as a phone; most of my friends are dead, so I generally call only my wife and my doctors. I have 65 third party apps, mostly games, and over 700 songs. I only used text messaging once, with my wife; it seems to have worked out. Nevertheless, I'm hardly a geek and at times I do start threads that I realize later—and people aren't reluctant to tell me—are real retreads. I had never seen the acronym MMS before, but now I see it everywhere.

I suspect this is not the end of my bloopers. Stay tuned for the next obvious, dumb question

I was an English professor at William Paterson University, a campus of the New Jersy State university system—or lack of system.

I don't take offense at the criticism. I had no idea what MMS meant; I came across it in Pogue's book and I couldn't understand why my iphone didn't give me the alternatives to include photos in messages that were shown in the illustration.

I've made this kind of blooper before, and the next time I'm tempted to start a thread, I'll try to scroll down more carefully to see if it's already been covered. Also, it's always a good idea to avoid using terms when you don't know what they mean. How often did I tell students that?

Not at all. I wrote it unconsciously, without realizing that it had a certain mordant humor. It's simply the truth. The other day a man in my apartment building suggested that I should set individual ring tones for those who call me regularly, but I've already done that. When the phone rings, it's my wife.
