Well, it uses the new UI of course. It has a nice progress bar for initial launch when it does its machine learning stuff, and it says that it's finding duplicates right now. Not sure if it could do that before.

Anything in particular you want to know?

Curious if the export options have changed. Also does the Photos App still store photos with its own naming system and not the original photo name in the database?

Can you hide the sidebar in photo app?

Not as far as I can tell. The toolbar and sidebar go away by default with a picture open in fullscreen, and you can choose to always show them even when fullscreen and with a picture open, but otherwise it seems to be a permanent fixture.

Alright, thanks very much.

A good test if anyone has the time (this bug has existed all through Catalina):

1. Create a smart album which lists all photos "not in any album".
2. Make sure it shows at least one photo, then create an album and add that photo to it.
3. Check the photo has gone from the smart album. Success!
4. Delete the new album (yes, with the photo in it - don't remove the photo first)
5. Check the smart album ... the photo should be back in it but the bug means it won't show

I'll probably be installing BigSur later today/tomorrow, so I'll come back and edit this with my own results.

@emulajavi FYI - I know this bugged (hah!) you in Catalina too.

EDIT: Fixed!!! I'm shocked. MacOS 11 is looking as good as iOS 14 is, as far as fixing old bugs is concerned.

Finding duplicates is a big one! I have been waiting years for that feature.

Wow! It's great that's been finally fixed. It only took one year!

I hope they'll also fix it in Catalina so we do not have to wait till October....

Also, I hope they will add support for Smart Albums in iOS.... it'd be great to have the 'album is not any' album in iOS

There are no smart albums in iOS 14. However, Hashphotos has that function. The free version allows you to only create one smart album, but "not in any album" as your one free smart album may be all you need out of that app. The app has more features than this - it's a good app.

Arrgh. I was wondering myself and here it is, my question answered.

I wonder what the technical reason is for not supporting Smart Albums in iOS. I don't even care that much about editing or creating them; I just want to be able to VIEW them! They even sync over iCloud so the data is there and available for iOS to use. But nope!

"This'll make 'em buy a laptop, hahahahaah" is probably the reason. Same logic as to why we still can't edit photo titles (despite the fact that's the text that will show under every photo in MacOS Photos), or even display the titles unless we go into search mode and actually start typing it in. Grr.

Yeah, it's a pretty dumb reason, considering it's annoying me and I have multiple Macs. I just like to be able to do things on the go as well when I don't have my laptop.

Not to mention, Apple has been inconsistent about which platform gets certain features. iOS 13 has more video editing features and allows you to share stuff with iCloud links, while Catalina does not. Catalina has good metadata editing and smart albums, where as iOS 13 doesn't. It's frustrating; both should have feature parity.

Finally had a chance to grab the beta.

~50,000 image Photo Library opened fine after a few minutes sitting at 94%. And it's a great upgrade - not only rotation of video, but also all the usual Photo adjustments (lighting, noise reduction, etc) can now be applied to videos.

Good stuff - working well so far!

For me, the most important change is that we can apply edits on videos as well. Adjustments, cropping, rotation, pretty much what I was hoping for 👌🏼
