Hi,

I have a general question regarding file sizes of videos in iOS 13 regarding the new non destructive editing in iOS 13.

Example:
- I have a video that's 50 MB big.
- I trim it by let's say 50%: Prior to iOS 13 I would have only had the option to save it as a copy and that copy would then be 25 MB in size.
- But in iOS 13 I would assume that it's still 50 MB big (because of the non destructive editing). Is that correct?

I checked the file size of a video after trimming it (with an app called "Metapho") and it was indeed smaller but I guess that in the background it still occupies the same storage space in iCloud.

Thanks and best wishes
Chris

It seems to me like clipping or cropping a video will reduce its filesize when seen from Google Photos (or other applications, I would assume). However, I notice that if I ever edit (say, increase contrast or vibrance) the video, the filesize nearly doubles.

Does anyone know a way on the iPhone to destructively apply edits? Say I'm fine with losing the original to save on space. For instance, tonight I took a ten minute video of my daughter opening up birthday presents. I did a simple auto filter. Now the file is 1.6 GB instead of 900 MB. Ridiculous. Had to use Handbrake to whittle that down to something close to the realm of reasonable.

Update: Looks like exporting from iMovie will get the filesize back to where it should be, shedding the original.

Oh, and it looks like if you try and revert to original within Photos, it doesn't recover the extra space taken up by your changes.

Oh man, that doesn't sound good. What I also tried is to create a duplicate once I applied my edits but unfortunately it's still a non destructive duplicate.
