I recently traveled from Minneapolis to Miami and snapped a few pictures along the way. My phone was in Airplane Mode the entire time. As I looked back at some of the pics I see they were Geo-Tagged at places along our route. How is this possible? Image.png
 
It's because the GPS receiver parts of the phone are not turned off when in Airplane Mode.
Yup, that would be it. I believe it started being like that as of one of iOS 8 updates (while prior to that Airplane Mode would disable GPS as well).
