So is there a way to get Photos to sync over icloud when the primary library isn't on the system disk? I ask because my Wifes Mac doesn't have space to put the Photos library on and I wanted to clear up space by uploading her photos to iCloud. Photos.app is telling me that it can't sync the library as it isn't on the system disk.

Where does it tell you this? My pics aren't uploading from an external thunderbolt drive. But it doesn't say this that I see, they just aren't uploading, in setting it says uploading xxxx photos and just stays there.

I figured it out, you have to tell Photos.app that the library is the system library in preferences. Then it will allow iCloud sync to work. Where I saw the warning was in the iCloud page and I believe it says it in the iCloud pref pane in Photos.app. When I get home I can upload a screenshot.

Thanks. I don't need a screenshot I don't think. Last night it appeared to start uploading them finally. I thought a few old pics were on iCloud.com. I still have none on my ipad but realized I didn't have WiFi turned on. So hopefully I'll check later and they will have all uploaded to iCloud. I wish I could check iCloud.com on my ipad:(

I've never got my Photos to sync. Now I'm playing around again and I'm now getting the same message. When I go to preferences and "set as system library" it warns me that photos won't be synced and photos on this app will be deleted. Did you get this too? Did it actually delete anything?

I didn't get that message, :(. rename your photo.app library, allow the app to create a new one, see if it gives you the same message.

I went ahead and copied the library to back it up, then clicked OK when it said that message. It didn't delete anything, but I left for work, so I'm hoping its uploading as we speak.
