Photos App is Still a 'Mish-Mash'

It seems that two extremes exist within the Photos app. With images in synced albums, you can do nothing with them - you can't edit, move delete or do anything to them. They're cast in stone.
With albums created on the device, you can do a lot with them, as long as you don't delete the images in the Camera Roll, as the one ones in the created albums are merely shortcuts, and will disappear.

Ahh yes. A clear fail on my part. I can't add and delete from a synced album, which is my main beef.

Yep agreed. That's why I went back to the old way, before iOS5.

it's a synced album, why would you expect to be able to add or delete from it?
it's source is not the iphone, it is from an external source. it is that external source that sets what it added or deleted from it.

I'm aware of that, but it's always baffled me as to why it's that way.
I mean, photos in a synced album should act just like they were in any regular folder with images in.
Synced videos can be deleted on the device, I just don't see why synced photos are so locked down and images within folders created on the device, are chained to the Camera Roll.

As well as all that, if you edit a synced image, the edits are only present in a Camera Roll copy, not in the synced folder that you want that image to reside in.
Small things, that frustrate immensely.

I'm surprised that an iPhoto/Aperture app still doesnt exist. Photos has become such a major part of the iPhone/iPad experience (and marketing) that it doesn't make sense to NOT have an iPhoto/Aperture.app and instead have photos just be an iTunes tab.

Hopefully Apple is secretly working on an app that covers all the features people would benefit from:

- Destructive Editing of sync'd photos as an OPTION
- Library management as OPTION (delete all the duds while on the road)
- Places/Faces/keyword sync (tagging while watching TV or on bus syncs to Mac)
- iPhoto Sync removed from iTunes and managed within app
- Sync from a separate computer (iTunes from Mini, Photos from MBP)
- Video sync (Native rather than 3rd party)
- Cards.app is an iPhoto feature rather than simplistic separate app)

Its just a shame because the iPad/iPhone is more than capable of aiding our iPhoto/Aperture workflow so it would be nice to see it more integrated and I'm sure many prosumer/pros would gladly pay $5 for it.

I don't know why they don't just turn it into the iOS version of iPhoto in the same way they did with iMovie?

Simple answer: don't sync your photos to iTunes or iCloud. Works fine. You can always add or delete by using the iPhone/iPad as a flash drive. Plug in to computer, don't open iTunes, and look for the drive where the iDevice is located. Open and look for DCIM folder. There are your photos and you can work with them on the computer. (PC is what I have).

I hate this too. My only conclusion as to why this is is because, sync'd photos are optimized for the phone. You can have a 6mb image on your computer, but it'll be optimized to say 600k on your phone. So if you edit those on your phone, plug it in and sync, your original 6mb file will be sync'd with the 600k, unless there's some options for you to overwrite or not. And my thinking is Apple thinks that will confuse the experience too much for the mass demographic, and decided against it. Just like every other feature you'd think averagely savvy people can figure out. They just got to make it friendly for the lowest common denominator.

This is why there's Photo Shack Pro. You can create your own albums, load them with photos from your iPad Photos Library without actually duplicating anything, and even save them and their organization back to your computer. You still need to keep your photos around that you want included in your albums, but you can decide what photos and albums you want in your libraries and which ones you don't. As far as I'm concerned, it's the "Photos" app replacement.
