The photos app on my 2018 Mac mini running Big Sur 11.1 isn't updating. I will take a photos with my iPhone and they go to iCloud but somehow don't make it to the photos app on my Mac. The last photo on my Mac is December 13th and I've taken at least 50 photos since then. My Mac is connected to the internet because I'm typing this post on it now. The only thing I've tried is I rebuilt the photos database by holding down the Command and Option keys while opening the photos app. I'm not sure what else to do.

Edit I looked at the dates and it seems the last time it updated was before I updated my Mac to 11.1 from 11.0.1 so maybe this is a Big Sur 11.1 bug?

No, it's not a bug. Check your Photos preferences and make sure iCloud photos is turned on. Maybe quit and relaunch Photos. Try logging out and back in. Try rebooting. Try turning iCloud Photos off and on again. Log into iCloud.com and make sure they are there. How else would you know for sure that your phone is uploading them?

Clearly it's a bug because it was working properly before and now it's not. I don't know if it's because of 11.1 or that's just a coincidence.

I just double checked and iCloud photos is turned on. I've quit and relaunched photos so many times I lost count. I will try rebooting. IDK why I didn't try that first 🤦‍♂️. If that doesn't work I'll try turning off iCloud photos and back on.

How else would i know my phone is uploading them? Because I did check iCloud so that's why I said it was a problem with Photos on my Mac and not my phone.

Okay I found out the problem. When I disabled iCloud for photos and reenabled it I got the message "Your full-resolution photos and videos stored in iCloud may not fit on this Mac." so it looks like my 512 GB SSD is getting full. I just don't get why it didn't give me some warning that it was unable to download my photos instead of just not doing it. :(

I did the optimize storage option and now it's saying "Updating" so I guess all is good.
