in iOS 9 you could easily search one year ago today and now I can't seem to do that. Also, none of the so called smart searches work at all. I search certain animals, types of places, objects, etc and none of it works. If I type beach it will show me beaches based on the geotag title of the photos, not actually searching for beaches itself.
 
Mine works perfectly! I can search for example a car, and pictures with cars will appear...

Your iPhone needs to scan all of your pictures first so that this feature works. The scan is done automatically when your phone is powered and locked. You can see how many pictures were scanned in the photos app in your album FACES
