That's basically my question. MBP on 10.10.3, iPhone and iPad running iOS 8.3. It appears that smart albums -- in my case, albums which add photos based on a keyword I added to a picture's metadata -- do not sync to iOS devices, whereas manually created "dumb" albums presumably do.

Is there something I'm missing that would allow me to have smart albums carry over to my phone?

You are not missing anything. Smart Albums do not sync. Also, Face's do not Sync either (even between Mac's). However, some other metadata is. I really like using Smart Albums so I hope this happens.

On a side note, if you use the iTunes Sync it will Sync Smart Albums. But I don't want to do that.

Wonder what the technical issue is. The keywords do sync, as I can search for them to find the pics that are contained in the smart albums by keyword on my laptop. Interesting. Can't think of any better way than to either just rely on keywords or start using manual albums again.
