Photos App

Hello,

I'm wondering is the new Photos App going to be based around this:

I seriously hope not. This will be a major step back for anybody actually interested in taking photos and not just taking selfies/snaps, applying silly filters and a share button for facebook.

If they are going to maintain the functions of Iphoto then why even change the name. To me this is a sign that they will be merging closer and closer to Iphone/Ipad simplicity at the expense of quality and function.

It would be good if they took the opposite direction and actually combined some of the features of Aperture and Iphoto making it a stronger and more versatile program rather than watering it down.

In the end I guess it will be a matter of time to see what happens but I'm not feeling very hopeful.

It is going to be based around the iOS photos app, and looks very similar. Time will tell if they retain all of the functionality of iPhoto and aperture but given what happened with iWork, i doubt it.

Basically, we have many problems managing our photo on iPhone and iPad, and Photostream is not the solution forward for syncing photos between platforms. This new Photo app (Yes, it's new even for iOS) will solve all of these issues. No more Photostream. All your pictures and videos will be in iCloud as much as your iCloud storage allow to. We will never have to manage it anymore and every pictures and videos will be syncing between every devices you own.
For features, it will have a very good set of features to edit your pictures, and it will has extensions (yes, on OSX too). This features are as good as iPhoto has now.
And sharing is easy.
This is version 1 and it will be improved upon year after year. I can't wait for it. The bottom line is everyone wanted every single photo on iPhone to be synced across platforms, not just from Photostream, and you got exactly that!

Exactly it is awesome. I don't think the photos app for yosemite will be as basic as ios 8 photos. I'm sure there will be loads of features similar to iphoto. Will it be the high end photo suite that some people expect, of course not.
I just can't wait to have the last piece of the data puzzle solved, aka photo management.

God I still don't know if it will really solve it. My photos are like partially on my computer in the photos app, partially on an external, some are in the iPhoto database, who knows which Photostream photos have been lost... ugh. I wish a photo app could just have the option to "Organize Photo Folder" similar to the "Organize Media Folder" option in iTunes. I create an event in the Photos app, that event folder is created on my hard drive in the photos folder. idk.

iPhoto isn't going anywhere. So use that until Apple has a solution that isn't cloud based. We aren't sure if this app will support albums from iPhoto and photos stored only on a disk and on in the cloud.

I am pretty sure it will. It has already been confirmed that iphoto and aperture will not be supported anymore.
Of course if you have various photos in various locations than I'm not sure how that will be handled. It is being said that people can import there photos from these app into the new photos app.

By solving I ment that you can have your photos finally in the cloud (like movies etc) on a permanent basis.
So in theory you can import all your various photos from its different locations into the icloud photo library and have them all synced and stored in one location.
Photo stream photos are not there permanent so if you had photos in there and reached the 1000 photo limit or 30 days they will be deleted.
I have already started to sort out all my various pictures so that I can import them into icloud photo library in the future.

Concolidating iPhoto and Photos might not be a major leap forward, but its in no way a step backwards. Its a side-step. And its a smart one. They've (basically) made iPhoto into a stock app by making it free for all theirs users. So the question becomes: Who wants to have two stock photo-apps on their phone?

The only thing that is for sure is that it will not lack any feature you find in the current version of iPhoto.

I'm just a an amateur photographer so I can't actually comment on what you get with Aperture that you don't get with iPhoto, but just talking from my experience, I'm actually quite happy with the editing functions of iPhoto. What I'm dissatisfied with as far as iPhoto goes is the same as everybody else: The organization of photos. I think Photos will improve this. Alot. I'm looking forward to trying it.

I just want a reliable way to send a photo from Mac to iPhone and vice versa. This task is currently impossible, as the technology to do such crazy things does not yet exist. Perhaps in the future, such things will no longer be regarded as ambitious nonsense, but rather a possibility. I dream of a world where I can take a photo with my iPhone, and then perhaps sometime later that day, view that photo on a slightly larger monitor without using a cable. Call me crazy, but I'm sure one day this will be a possibility.

Well it was indeed sarcastic, but I am actually using a mix of Dropbox and iCloud to do this, but neither works reliably, hence my great annoyance. Dropbox sometimes refuses to load images, or they load pixellated and fuzzy with a spinning wheel in the middle and it just stays that way without ever finishing, or worse, the image loads perfectly but the spinning wheel stays there in the middle of the image, while iCloud only ever transfers about 80-90% of the images, and the rest simply refuse to sync no matter what.

Photos in iCloud is a great idea unless you happen to be using a camera that generates large files.

My photography is strictly amateurish, but my D7100 produces RAW files that are 25-30Mb, which causes no end of problems for storage.

Around 200Gb of my 500Gb drive is filled simply with iPhoto libraries - and that's since getting a lot more strict about deleting unwanted files.

Okay, the 1TB subscription isn't going to cost a lot in the grand scheme of things, but all the same, I think I'd prefer the ability to have just the thumbnails locally and some of the original files on an external drive.

I haven't worked with the new Photos app, but in theory it solves the nightmare of editing and managing photos across devices.

Any thoughts about how the new Photos app will manage existing iPhoto / Aperture libraries? I've read that this will be a "seamless process", but I'm still very skeptical. Will Photos still support the managed vs. referenced libraries?

I have been thinking about taking the plunge and converting my referenced Aperture library to a managed library, and I am wondering whether it will make transitioning to Photos easier. At least with a managed iTunes library, you have an idea of where the underlying files are; iPhoto / Aperture libraries are like black holes.

Disclaimer: I am a hobbyist photographer who uses Lightroom / PS for image editing and uses Aperture merely for managing personal photos.

I haven't seen it said anywhere that this isn't going to possible...or that it is.

We simply don't know at this point. I would be staggered if Photos forces us to put every single raw and jpeg photo in the iCloud Library, with no option.
