First MacBook (although ive been an iPhone/iPad user for many years). Does anybody else have an issue with iCloud photos downloading properly in the phots app? I shows them on iCloud, but Ive set the app to download originals and it just kind of keeps saying downloading without any downloading. I can get it to download by toggling between optimise and original and then plugging in the main power cord; but without that additional process it kinda just keeps saying downloading. Does anybody else struggle in the app?

I prefer to download / sync pictures directly to the mac (Photos) with the cable (from iPhone/iPad) and keep them in the Photos library (which can be backed up - locally - on another drive etc) that way if your apple login does not work (someday) for some reason you don't loose access to your photos

I also get sometimes weird behavior with iCloud Fotos. I think the app has to be open AND in the background. So maybe you had it open but as active window so it wouldn't download the fotos. The servers apple is using are also extremely slow - this is at least the case for me.
I think you also have to set your foto library as "main library" / or "system library" (one of those terms). My library is quite large (around 30.000 pictures) and it took several days (with sometimes having the Mac powered on in the night) to download those pictures.
