Photos behave differently for different contacts

Question - on my iPhone, how do I get the photo to fill the entire screen like a wallpaper whenever a contact calls or I call them?

For two (out of about 80) contacts in my iPhone, the photo of the person appears huge (like a wallpaper) whenever they call or I call them. For other contacts, they merely show up as a small 1/4" x 1/4" photo in the upper right hand corner of the screen.

I like it when the photo fills up the screen -- how do I make this happen for all contacts?

The ones you want to appear as fullscreen you must take the pic with the iPhone and add to contact.

Tell me, does your iPhone crash a lot?

My first iPhone did exactly what you describe. Any time my wife called, her contact image filled the screen and the iPhone often crashed.

Eventually, I took the iPhone back to Apple who gave me a replacement. When I restored my settings to the new phone, however, the crashes began again.

They only stopped when I removed the picture of my wife from my contacts and replaced it with a different one. The image must have been corrupt. Everything started behaving after that and I've never had a contact image fill up the screen as it used to.

As an interesting side issue, I posted this story on the Apple forums and received the following email from them within hours:

"Hello Sir. I am interested to see if you still have that photo that was causing the issue with your iPhone.

If you still have it could you please email it to me. Thank you.

We do not normally contact people on Discussions personally. But this is something we would like to do further testing on.

Please do not mention that Apple Contacts people from Discussions if they ask. This is a special case circumstance. Thank you sir."

So, despite what they tell you, Apple DO trawl their own forums. And they WILL respond if it is in their interests to respond.

Renegad3 - the two pictures that are appearing full screen are indeed pictures taken with the iPhone camera.

Truth24 -- and all -- am am looking to get pictures to appear full screen that are not necessarily taken with the iPhone camera. Most of my pictures are photos that I've taken over time, with assorted digital cameras, and have simply dragged and dropped into the "photo" field in the Address Book. How can I get these photos to behave the same way as the photos I've taken with my iPhone camera, and appear full screen when someone calls?

Well I did some experimenting.

You can import any photo and add it on the iPhone to make it full screen.

If you have an existing photo already on the phone, just go to the contact, and click edit, then tap the photo(or where the photo should be, it will say edit) then navigate to the picture you want to use. You can move it and crop before you add it. Then just click save, then done.

If you want to import new ones, I just made a folder called contacts, added the pics I wanted to use, then sync'd it to the iPhone. Then just follow above to add it to a contact.

If you use mail app or something other, it will only give you the thumbnail. You have to add the pic ON the iPhone, not in contacts/mail/whatever app you sync with.

For Mac Users:

If you have photo attached on your address book and sync it to your phone, it will show up as a small icon. (Just like in Address Book)

If you take the picture with iPhone, then use it as contact photo, it will show up as full screen.
