Photos for OS X is a joke.

I'm so glad I switched to Google Photos (from Dropbox/Carousel).

I have it a shot, but Apple is forcing me to tag my "faces". I'll do 200, while it "automagically" does 20. Somehow I felt that iPhoto did this much better.

I'm done with clicking on things. Apple should be doing this for me.

Don't even get me started on the barren looking app. It's far to iOS like for a desktop app. Luckily, I here that Apple is FINALLY investing in machine learning technology, but if that goes anything like their Maps app, it'll be years before it's even remotely useable.

Nah, I agree with him about face tagging. I would tag one picture of myself, and another very similar photo I would still have to manually tag it since Photos can't automatically determine that is me as well.

It's not suppose to. It's suppose to recognizes FACES en masse so that I can tag them with a name. Having to do this manually is PITA with Apple. Flawless with Google. Google's implementation was the instant I logged into the app. Apple forces me to sit at a desk and click, click, click, click, click, click. What's worse is you have to do it ONE PICTURE AT A TIME.

Yep. Most of their software is just good enough to get you started, but not much depth to their apps. It didn't use to be this way, but when 90% of your profits are from iPhone, I guess this is how it goes.

I've given Photos 1 year, but it's clear Apple doesn't give a hoot about this app. El Capitan just put in extensions and the ability to add GPS data. It's soccer mom app.

Oh well, I've deleted the data. No sense in trying to maintain this and Google Photos.

Photos definitely has its flaws, but it's definitely better than iPhoto.

However, I miss things from Aperture. I wish Apple had continued Aperture development in parallel with Photos; have it use iCloud Photo Library and all that, and optimize it so that you could open the same library in either app. For a company with the resources Apple has I'm really surprised they didn't.

Aperture was amazing. Thankfully I don't take enough photos anymore to need its power.

I keep hoping Photos will morph into something usable, but it doesn't look headed that way. Third-party extensions may help in some areas, but not with core capabilities such as some idiot's decision that all sorting by date will be based on the date the image was imported to Photos. Well over half my library is from scanned photos taken during the pre-digital "dark ages" and I've taken pains to use exiftool to tag the images with the dates they were taken. Photos chooses to ignore this information during import, making it useless to me. How about a Preferences toggle to allow the user to specify which date is used, or is that beyond the programming capabilities of the rear-guard coders Apple has left in the OS X apps division?

In my experience Photos does use EXIF data when you import photos. How exactly are you importing?

Of cause it's using EXIF data, that's how photos make up all this 'moments' stuff. In 'moments' all pictures are in order, but that's not the same for the camera roll as known as the album 'all photos'. Maybe he's using this one.

Never even started it. I prefer Picasa for my library and PS for editing. Also happen to have Lightroom, but Picasa serves my needs.

Click on the face of a person. Click the top right button. Several face tags with one click.

Damn, I hate it when someone else is right! I got lazy and didn't rerun my original tests of this problem and based all my ranting on the fact that the date mentioned in the All Photos album continues to be "Date Added." I import into Photos in two ways: (1) directly from an iPhoto library and (2) from images I've pulled from an iPhoto library and added information to the EXIF headers using exiftool. I have retested both of these routes, and both appear to now work as desired.

There are still things I dislike about Photos, but now that my main gripe appears to have been resolved I need to import one of my big libraries and play around with Photos to see if there are gains to be had that outweigh the losses.

Thanks for prodding me to get off my lazy butt and rerun my tests!

Photos is basic, but does what it's supposed to do. I personally don't click/tag friends as I don't see any value in that.

I agree, I use Google Photos instead and am much more impressed with the functionality and its ability to make GIFs, collections ETC. Apple's Photos app I have only used to get pictures from my camera roll when I'm too lazy to get up and airdrop them.. It needs help: big time.

Whaddya expect from a freebie? You can pay some money and get better product. Apple doesn't seem to want to be in the business of making anything but lightweight apps that feature some of the OS features, or to sell their expensive space in iCloud Photo Library. Which is fine; others have more than taken up the challenge of making something better. Look at Macphun's stuff, or Mylio, for recent examples.

In combination with iCloud Photo Sharing I find Apple Photos to be, decent. Its very basic but it does what I need it too. Faces could definitely be improved, I gave up on that a long time ago.
