So I do have a large Photo library in excess of 120 GB and over 35,000 photos. I am also on the public beta. When I first transitioned to the Beta most of the faces transitioned but then it got stuck and never finished. It was in the 28,000 range. I ended up having issues with my account because of the forced move back to a local password so I created a new account for myself and started fresh. On the new account I did not move or transition anything over from the original one. I let the photo database rebuild from iCloud and once it was done, it started to scan for faces again. It stopped scanning yesterday morning around 9am "Finding People 4995 of 35730 items processed" I have tried restarting photos and restarting the computer but it does not want to kick in and continue. Has anyone else experienced this yet?

I have same problem. My library is much smaller (2000 photos) but its stuck on 653 and hasn't moved all night
I have add the same issue with both public beta 1 as well as beta 2. I have reloaded the photos library a couple of time back to my El Capitan version to force it to start over. But It never seems to report it has finished. It says 3452 out of 3610 items processed on the last attempt. However, the scan does produce amazing results when searching photos.
My upload of my library that is about 5000 photos is not going anywhere for days , it just says "uploading" but remains unchanged ... I just leave there , my pictures are not syncing since installing beta 2 in the phone and Sierra on my Mac... thinking that this bug will be iron out sometime soon with next releases .
So this is obviously a bit of a bug at the moment and will probably be fixed in the next beta release. I wondered if the photos app was trying to detect faces in videos as the total number of files its processing in my library would include the videos. Would also explain why its so slow and looks like its stopped.. my photos app has moved about 10 photos in a week
Mine will scan, and it has slowly gotten through half of my 10,000 photos. But according to the Activity viewer, that process (photoanalysisID) is taking up to 170% of my iMac's CPU, causing it to run so hot that it shuts down (see earlier reply on this subject.) This app is not ready for prime time IMHO. From what I've read on this thread, it has been a problem for some time. Well, it still is, gold master or not. I sent feedback to Apple, so maybe they'll work on it.

Weird all my other devices scanned without problems. It's only my MacBook Air that won't scan anything at all, if I didn't have that device I'd have thought there wasn't anything wrong with it. I'll send feedback to apple.
Just a rough figure for the others. My Mac has a 3.46 (Turbo 3.73) GHz CPU, Photos apps can use around 2 threads (about 200% CPU) to analysis the photos. My wife's library has about 70k photos. My Mac run 24/7, it looks about 48hours to finish the scan.
Did anyone need to leave photos open or closed or in any particular configuration in order for it to scan? I've now tried a fresh install and leaving it running overnight and it still won't scan anything in the people album. That includes object recognition too. Really weird.
Well, I spoke too fast. After putting a fan blasting air on the back of my iMac, it cooled the cores enough to allow it to keep running. But when it got to 9055 photos, it just stopped scanning. I have about 2300 left. There is no way to manually stop or start the scan, as you all know. I tried it with the app not open (as it says) and overnight it still didn't scan a single picture. Activity Monitor shows the photoanalysisID process once in a while, but only for a second and using .1% of the CPU (was 170% when working). So, Photos checks in, but doesn't do anything. I'm going to leave the app open for a while now to see if that makes any difference.
I like the new features, but the toll (and time) it's taken dealing with this one app has been frustrating to say the least. I know better than to be an early adopter with my main Mac, but did it anyway. Never again...
There are always 2 profiles logged in on my Mac. My condition is like this.
Profile A, very few photos, the scan finish in few minutes after upgrade.
Profile B, about 70k photos. It end up cost 2 days to finish the scan.
I mainly use profile A, and will monitor profile B's scan process via CPU usage.
And I realise that when the scan stop, I switch back to profile B, open Photos, quit Photos, and then back to profile A, the scan in profile B will start again straight away.
If there is only one profile on your Mac, may be a logout / login can help.
Thanks, unfortunately I've tried both states, (open and closed) without success now. My MacBook has been powered on for days and its not scanned a single photo. Maybe as someone else suggested it's stuck on a video, I do occasionally see the com.apple.videoconversion process running. I'm out of ideas now, I've reported it to apple but haven't had a response. Maybe more information will be forthcoming via support documents once it's officially released. I just can't fathom why its worked virtually flawlessly on 3 other devices but won't work at all on this one though.
I have the same issue. I have 26,000 photos and in only 725 photos scanned. In the last beta no photos where scanned. I have left MBA on and the photo library is using 11-40% of my CPU.
