Photos In 10.15.3 Takes Forever To Gather Favourites, Analyse Scenes & Detect Duplicates

Hi

I updated to 10.15.3 and turned on Photos. My library is on an external HD.

It's taken about 4-5 hours and is still "Composing Layout, Gathering Favourites, Analysing Scenes and Detecting Duplicates"

The blue progress bar looks like it is about 60 percent through.

How long does it take to complete? I have turned Photos off and on again but it is still at where it was progress wise.

What exactly is it doing because my library hasn't really changed from before I updated to 10.15.3? I only imported 2 new photos from my iPhone.

Shouldn't it already have a record of what was previously indexed in the previous OS?

It took me DAYS and DAYS to do my 52k+ photo and video database. Seems like on a weekly basis almost every day Photos spends hours doing photo analysis at a pretty high CPU rate.

I would love more information on this because it seems like every time I get a new device and download the entire DB, it will sit there and process "Composing layout, gathering favorites, analyzing scenes....." .

I’ve had similar experiences on iOS 13 and macOS Catalina. From what I gather, both OSs are doing substantially more analysis and processing of images than previous versions. Every photo is being scanned locally for cats, dogs, faces, cars, biscuits, landmarks etc etc (there are lists out there that cover everything!), plus series of similar photos are analysed for sharpness, composition etc to pick the best one.

With every OS release, this scanning seems to happen again. My 30K library often takes a couple of weeks to complete. Keep in mind that the scanning only happens on iOS devices when they are plugged in and locked.

I also found it strange that on the Mac app it says the scanning happens when the device is plugged in. I guess it doesn't differentiate between a MacBook and a desktop Mac.

My scanning finished 3 hours on from my initial post so a total of about 8 hours but I don't really have many photos and they aren't all that complex.

I was in the middle of a photo project when this scanning/updating thing started. My Photos app did not fully populate yesterday when I went to use it for part of my project. I am still sitting here staring at the progress line.
I have a finish a project by tomorrow. Can I continue to use this Photos app, adding newly scanned photos, and also use iMovie to make a slideshow to music movie file? Will this process in Photos continue while I am working? Or will I have to start from scratch on the Photos updating?
